Question Heightened Sense of Smell / Taste

I noticed that since being LC that my sense of smell has changed. Not so much the ketosis breath everyone mentions, but just in general. I walk around the office and I can smell, for example, the hot plastic of a computer monitor like three or more feet away from it. I ask if anyone else smells it and no one does.

In general, I've noticed that people's breath who are not LC is intensely revolting. Much moreso than before LC. I also find that odors in general are much more intense.

Also, another thing I've noticed. Sometimes in the morning right after I wake up and while taking a shower, I taste the water from the spigot and it tastes sweet. This sensation doesn't last long, but it's interesting. I don't remember this happening before LC. It seems to be the most intense after a heavy workout the day before. Is this the flavor of ketones?

Thanks...

Hi commorancy,

I've noticed a hightened sense of taste - particularly sweet things. Cabbage soup tastes sweet to me now. Apple is sickly sweet and my sense of taste is generally enhanced.

I think it is the way we are meant to be. Taste and smell are what tell us what is good to eat.

I don't know if is anything to do with ketones though.

Yes, I agree. It doesn't take much sweet to make something sweet to me after LC. In fact, things that I thought that used to be 'normal' sweet are now very intense. Sometimes to the point of being sickening.

But, whenever I do crave something sweet, I make some lemonade with sacharrin/stevia. A little of these two sweeteners together goes a lot further than a lot of one of them.

Or, I'll make some almond flour cookies with a little honey heightened with stevia or sacharrin.

And, you know, you can make some pretty darned good pastries with Almond flour. I made a birthday cake with a little almond flour, a bunch of eggs and some honey. Came out great and fairly LC per piece. It's also great for those days where I'm carbing up a little. I alternate being LC on and off to keep my body guessing.

However, getting back to my original point. My sense of smell seems more heightened than my sense of taste. Although, both have intensified since LC.

I've noticed that shower water tastes sweet too. I can smell a various assortment of things too.

I wonder if refined carbs worked as a senses dulling "drug" that we were all addicted to and didn't notice until we weren't on them any more.

People say that we've lost much of our senses compared to animals or early man...maybe it's just the carbs masking them for the majority.

Hi all,

yes, strange things happen....a dry red wine is sooo sweet to me, cauliflower is sweet, not to mention blueberries...

Can't imagine what happens when I actually eat something sweet for the first time...
