Unhappy So So Cold

Hi Everyone,

Looking for advice again I hope you don't mind.

I am only 28 and always cold. This is not a new thing, but has been present for as long as I can remember. I also have very poor circulation which means that I often get cramp in my feet and numbness if I cross my legs for even a short period of time. Combined with this is a ghastly metabolism which was probably further damaged by an ED and yo-yo dieting particularly in my teens and early 20s.

Anyway, I've just read in DANDR that being cold can be a symptom of a thyriod problem. When I say cold, I mean cold. My 92 year old grandmother has better circulation and warmer hands and feet than I do (so does everyone else I seem to meet). I'm looking for some information so that I can discuss this in an informed way with my typically dismissive Doctor.

Thanks again for your help and support

SG

StarGirl,

I sometimes get very cold when I do not have enough to eat. I don't know if this is similar to your situation, but I have been on so many diets and "fasts" in particular during the last few years. (coincidentally, Low-carb eating was the only thing that ever worked for me out of all the plans I tried) During some of those times I remained cold throughout the entire fast or diet.

I would be interested in finding out what sort of scientific or medical reason lies behind this...

Additionally, my mother has always been a colder natured person because she has lower blood pressure than most people. Could this be similar to your situation?

I hope you find out what the cause of this is! In the meantime, I'll let you borrow some of my cozy, warm sweaters!

Thank you Garrison,

You raised a really important point about the blood pressure that I'd forgotten all about. I do have slightly low blood pressure that might contribute towards it. I'll ask the doctor. As for dieting causing it, it hasn't seemed to have an impact. It doesn't matter whether I'm on a diet or not, I am permanently freezing (particularly hands and feet).

I guess I'm kinda hopeing that a have a thyriod problem because it might be an easy answer to my metabolism issues (although, perhaps I am stupidly courting dissaster).

thanks again

SG

StarGirl,

For what it's worth...my hands and feet are ALWAYS freezing...and I don't have a blood pressure problem or a thyroid problem.

Maybe some of us out there are just supposed to go around with heavy socks and mittens on year round!

If you feel comfortable sharing...then I'd really like to know what your doctor says about it.

There is a whole forum here on Thyroid in the Low Carb Health section. Here is a thread called Why am I always cold? . Just click on those underlined words to go and read it. Then you will be in the Thyroid forum and you can read the other posts. Many contain links to thyroid iinfo sites. One that is good is at www.about.com

Hope this helps.
