Question RE: ? about gardening as exercise

Yesterday, I opted to do a bit of gardening in place of my 20MAS. I put in 3.5 hours of "general gardening" according to Fitday.com and when I plugged that into their system I allegedly burned 851 calories! Does that seem right? This is what I did for the 3.5 hours.

Moved & reset 10# retaining wall blocks approx 40 blocks (about 1 hour)
Dug out plants and relocated about 6 plants 20# each (those damn periennials just never stop!) (about 30 minutes)
Pulled out massive quantities of weeds and sod (about 1.5 hours)
Spread out heavy (water logged hay bales) mulch (about 30 minutes)

I know I didn't eat enough yesterday to replace what I burned doing my gardening and I'm feel pooped out this morning. Hence, I'm moving my UBWO til after work today.

I knew that gardening is a wonderful exercise I just had no idea how many calories it burns!

Thanks,

Annie G.

Annie, that sounds about right to me. It's amazing how many calories you can spend doing something you enjoy - just as amazing has how many you don't burn sitting at a desk all day

On those days I'm out in the garden I make sure I get a little more food - I'll have 7 meals instead of 6, and I'll have them closer together. Don't forget your water while you're out in the sunshine

Annie, I spend at least 3-4 hours a day in the garden when the weather permits, its amazing how many calories are being burned, and the best thing is that you don't "feel" like your exercising. Not only that, the sunshine gives you lots of energy and not only that you get a nice tan at it too

Happy Gardening!

I too am an avid gardener... I concur with the rest...great way to burn calories along with spending time enjoying one of life's gifts...the scent and palette of beautiful flowers all summer long...

How are your gardens doing everyone?... I have several winter hardy roses that are leafed out and everything seemed to winter well here in NB....
