Cool Packing a school lunch...help!

My daughter is 11 and has lost 10 lbs in 12 days.. She needs to lose at least 50 lbs. I need some help in what to pack for school lunch. She is already tired of a salad everyday. I try to pack a few slices of meet and a salad ..couple slices of cheese and sometimes an Atkins peanut butter cup..anyone with suggestions??? Sunnyz

My son and daughter 10 and 11 are jumping on the wagon with me.. Watching me make better choices has a marvelous effect on them.Instead of chips it's cheese sticks or sf jello, seasoned chicken breast instead of fried chicken tenders etc.. Makes me happy that they want to make better choices now..AFTERALL, their poor choices before were just a reflection of how I was eating before lc WOE.

What does her doctor say about the rapid weight loss? I've always been told it's best for children to go MUCH slower than that.

The doctor says if it works for her ...its great! It was my last resort and at this time in her life..she needs all the self esteem she can get so we decided to give it a try. Nothing else worked because she would sneak sweets etc. I figure the *fullness effect she gets from this...she won't be sneaking and she loves that her clothes are already loose. Sunnyz

Maybe you can add sandwhiches on Osolo Rolls (3 carbs each) or Atkins Bread, or make roll ups on LaTortillas. Will she use a Thermos? (some kids think its geeky lol) You could give her hot leftovers in it.

I also love the osolo rolls for a sandwich at lunch. The are lower in carbs than the low carb breads. Also, I have used ham & swiss or turkey & muenster cheese rollups. They are quick to make and they travel well. Good luck to your daughter. Now is the time to teach her to eat healthy.

Hi. When I pack a lunch for myself, it's usually some combination of chopped veggies and dip, peeled hard boiled eggs, cheese, and either leftover meat or cold cuts. And you know what I love? Gladware! It's revolutionized my kitchen. I've washed it in the dishwasher over and over and they're still in perfect shape.

A small handfull of nuts is also a welcome addition to help replace the crunch of chips and other snacks that she can no longer have. My daughter loves pistacios and sunflower seeds the best.

How about making her a few cheese chips. Use her favorite cheese. Put 1/4 ounce pieces on a stick free surface (I use no stick foil) and bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. Different cheeses take different times. The low carb bread or rolls would offer a lot of lunch menus and at 11 years of age, the few extra (good) carbs would not be a bad thing. Cold chicken such as low carb fried or bar-b-q would be nice. Celery stuffed with cream cheese or natural peanut butter (the regular stuff is full of sugar).

hi sunnyz! I pack a lc lunch for my 15 yr old every day. Luckily she likes left overs cold so that is an option for me. I often pack a salad with added meat from last nights dinner like sliced chicken, crumbled hamburger, or taco meat.We also use the o'so lo rollz (I buy mine online at www.thebetterhealthstore.com) for sandwiches. Sandwiches might include mayo, deli turkey or sliced chicken left over from dinner, and lettuce. I pack celery or cucumber strips with a little tupper of no carb dressing for dipping. Some snack items could include nuts or homemade protein bar (to avoid the sugar alcohols). Chicken or tuna salad in a rollz sandwich or on top of a salad is another favorite. If you make the parmesan coated chicken nuggets for dinner, they make especially yummy left overs even cold. I also make rollups with turkey(any deli meat would do) spread with a bit of mayo and my daughters favorite cheese (feta) . Sometimes I throw in a surprise like 2 lc marshmellows, 3 strawberries, or a lc no bake cheese cake in a mini muffin paper.The other day I found little cheeses in jungle animal wrappers.You are correct that variety is the key to avoid boredom. You deserve a big pat on the back for all you are doing as well as the great job of sticking with it that she is doing!

Our 10 year old is in love with pepperoni chips. We buy the huge bag at BJs. I nuke about 15 - 20 slices on paper towels for 130 seconds to make them into chips. Nice crunch and they aren't greasy (the towels sure are!). Also great for dipping, make your own or even a small amount of store bought onion dip is OK carb wise. Kids still want to eat like kids.

Lunch could include a clemintine (12 carbs after fiber, 6 for a half) which should be fine if the rest of the food is LC (turkey or RB rollups with swiss, olives, some green peppers, cherry tomatoes.) A piece of SF candy is a great idea. Kids don't want their lunch to be too different.

A half sandwich (6 carbs with the Arnolds bread) may be a good option for your daughter. Sandwich with some soup is nice this time of year. There are some lower carb ones. I sure do hate cleaning the thermos though.

Someone mentioned SF jello packs once. Never looked for them but if they exist, they might give you something else to pack once in a while.

Lots of good ideas in this thread. I'm going to use some for my own lunch!

My 8 yo DD is eating LC too. It's not for weight loss but more for behavior issues. She does eat more carbs than someone trying to loose. Some of the things I pack for her are:

Meat roll-ups (ham and swiss rolled with a little sour cream to help it stick or corned beef rolled with cream cheese and green onion in the middle)
.
Hard-boiled egg and either beef jerky or pepperoni slices

SF PBJ on LC bread

A bag of nuts instead of chips (there is a recipe I use for sweetened, buttered pecans cooking them up with butter, Splenda and cinnamon -- HUGE hit with the kids!).

SF Jell-O or some berries for a treat (she also does apples, pears, oranges and such but that's probably not ideal for weight loss).

Tuna or chicken salad -- either on LC bread or alone with a plastic spoon.

Veggies (celery, green pepper, carrots etc.) with a side of ranch dressing dip.

Cheese.

I do give her also SF yogurt with my own fruit added in and occasionally SF cookies but again, they are a little carby if weight loss is your goal. Yes, also check out the LC parents section-- I got most of my ideas there.
