Default extracts and flavorings

this seems like a really obvious question, but since i'm a non-cook, i have to ask it. for recipes that call for flavorings like vanilla, almond, or maple, is this just the standard extract form? i have vanilla extract but it has corn syrup in it and i'm not sure if that's okay. and i have no clue about the maple, almond, or any other. is there corn syrup in those as well and is that okay? i'm planning a trip to the grocery store today, so i've got to be prepared, else i'll be standing in the aisle staring at bottles for hours!

thanks!

In some recipes I will use atkins or da vinci flavored syrups instead of store bought flavorings. In other recipes where I have no choice I will use the imatation flavorings they have less carbs or none at all. Just my opinion but hope it helps some.
