Question Any Ladies Go Off Birth Control Pills?

Hi Ladies,

I've been contemplating going off the Pill while I try to lose weight on Atkins - to help (I hope!) speed up my weight loss.

I'm curious if anyone here has done this and what their results were?

Also, does anyone know if there are any risks with going on and off the Pill like that?

I'll of course discuss this with my OB/GYN before I do anything but I'm hoping to see what others' experiences have been...

Thanks in advance,
~Madison

I know of a quicker way of gaining weight by going OFF the pill. LOL.

Honestly, I don't know what effects it could have by going on and off of it. It does seem that if you plan to go back to it at some point in time that you would still gain some weight back. Discuss some alternative forms of birth control or reguation with your doctor to find out.

I am also considering going off the pill. I have a meeting with my ob/gyn tomorrow. I'm taking Yasmin right now but haven't lost those last 10-15 lbs.

I'm 43 and doing TSP. Dr. S treats BCP's like poison, so I thought I'd try going off of them. Hope it helps.

I went off the pill. I went on them mainly for the help that it gives with PMS - and so many people have had reduce PMS symptoms. Well the cramps weren't near as crippling as they used to be, they were still pretty bad. Also, the pill helps keep my skin clear, and even with this LC benifits, I started to get break outs again. Needless to say I am back on them and quite happy.

BTW: I didn't lose any faster off of them (Ortho tri-cylean)

I went off the pill for about two months, hoping it would help with my losing. I found that the additional worry/stress about getting pregnant outweighed the potential benefit of losing the weight more quickly.

I asked my ob/gyn about that, and she showed me about six studies in medical mags stating that the pill does not cause weight gain. Having said that, however, I am sure that there are as many studies that say the opposite.

For me, I decided like mma3735 that the stress of the p word was not worth any potential benefit!

Default I'm done with them.

I went off my Triphasil 21 in January after being on it for 11 years. I needed it to regulate my periods as I would go months with out stopping (was on it for years before I even had sex LOL) I did some serious research and discovered that it contributes to diabetes and gall bladder disease (me x 2!) Dammit anyways.

I'm married with 4 stepkids (best form of birth control) and a hubby with lung cancer, so it's not like we have a whole lot of time or energy for sex anyways.

I was always depressed when I was on it, moreso the past couple of years, which was the main reason I decided to go off it. My biggest fear is that my periods would come back with a vengeance like they were when I was a teen ( I'm serious...months without stopping...gives a whole new meaning to WHOOSH!) but so far, so good...knock on wood.

I don't regret taking them as they allowed me to go swimming and wear white pants, and I'll never regret going off them and feeling like I'm truly in control of my body for the first time in my life. I've read it can interfere with weight loss and think it did during my past LC efforts, along with half-assed committment to myself. Hope this helps!

Default I did

First I tried deppo. THAT SUCKED!! Let me just say that deppo made me a psycho. (a fat psycho).

I did not want any other hormones, so the pill is out. In Dec. I had the ole tubes tied.

As far as success goes; it'd probably be better if I would not drink so much beer That's my downfall. Beer. Especially in the summer months.

I am also taking a thermogenic, and I really like that.

Good luck.

I took the pill for years and years but went off three years ago (to have babies #3 and 4) and haven't gone back on (and won't). I feel sooooo much better without the hormones in me. My periods are better, my sex life is better, I just feel so much better OFF of it. We're using Natural Family Planning for the time being and, done correctly, it's as effective as the Pill (emphasis on done correctly). I highly recommend it for anyone wanting an alternative to chemical methods of BC.

I have been off the pill now for 11 years, with no mishap ! My advice would be if you chose to go off it, make sure you use protection for a few months till your system straightens out. Once again when you know your are running regular you can use other methods.

I took a month off birth control when I changed pills. I immediately dropped about five lbs. When I started the new pills, I immediately gained five lbs. Going off and on the pill didn't help me any.

Articles I've read suggest that bcps increase appetite, but don't directly cause weight gain.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'm not on the pill now, but have been in the past. I've heard that, for the past 5 years, pills don't cause weight gain any more than placebos...

I actually weighed a bit less when I was on the pill, and lost weight while on it...go figure.
