Default Couple of newbie questions

Hello everyone,

I've done low-carbing in the past and have lost a super amount of weight, but it's been creeping back over the last couple of years, and I've been having trouble getting the momentum going on a plan.

I don't own the Atkins book yet, though I plan to read it soon. I have read most of the tips on this website and have found them to be extremely helpful, not to mention the huge morale boost I get just from knowing all you guys are out there.

However, I've got a few pretty basic questions.

- Which "supplement pill" would you recommend? This site advertises a variety of different supplements, but I'm not sure which to pick. I should probably be taking some sort of multi-vitamin too, huh? I have a bunch sitting around, I just forget to take them.

- How do you guys feel about the various low-carb bars out there? I'm a college student, and my biggest problem in trying to get back on this thing has been eating junk food while I'm on the go. It just seems weird to be eating sweet stuff.

- What's the consensus on caffeine? I love diet soda, and enjoy an espresso every now and then (usually with milk, but I'll have to switch to cream). Is caffeine detrimental to the process? It would be hard to lose all my comforts.

Thanks for any information, or you guys can just tell me to go RTFM if this is stuff I should be learning elsewhere.

Take care,

~Seth~

Smile can only answer one

I can answer one question for you. Yesterday I went to a GNC and they have an Atkin's section. They have snack bars. I bought the cookies and cream and it was REALLY good. I couldn't believe how rich it was....I needed milk , but I just had water. As far as soft drinks....diet rootbeer has no caffiene and tastes great. However, I have read on this site that it contains aspertame which can hinder your progress. I have been drinking though, and lost 8 pounds in the first 10 days.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Seth! Congrats on getting back into LCing! Now...stay there!

As far as the caffeine goes... I can cause problems...try to wean yourself off. Same goes for Aspertame...stick to Splenda or stevia.

As for supplements, I take the Atkins Basic #3 and Atkins Essential Oils. Don't know how much good they do, but guess thay can't hurt.

About the bars and other goodies, like SF candy...I'm afraid to try them. I have heard of too many people who get carb and sugar cravings after eating them. I have no willpower (one of the reasons I love Atkins!) so I don't want to tempt fate right now!

Best of luck...you'll do great! And read the book!

BTW, Thelma, Bluto was an idiot and everyone knew he didn't know what the h*** he was talking about! It was supposed to be a joke! I would hope anyone with an IQ of 12 would know the truth...that it was the Russians who bombed Pearl Harbor!

Default Caffeine

No one has mentioned it yet but thereare many who have NOT given up their caffeine. I am drinking leaded coffee as I type this message. I also mix caffeinated with decaffeinated coffee. There is a poll floating on this forum about who gave up caffeine and who didn't. There are many who did not. Dr. Atkins said that it tends to stimulate appetite and insulin production. It can also cause stalls.

It is a joke. It is from animal house. I am German too. It was a motivational speech that Bluto made. When he says "germans", the other guys say "Germans?....forget it he's on a roll". Classic line from a classic comedy.

I found the following link to be very helpful regarding supplements:

http://www7.addr.com/~atkinsdiet/su...s.html#vitamins

I also quit caffeine when I started Atkins. I drink 2 Diet Rites a day. It has splenda instead of aspartame which can make some people stall.

A little late - but it did finally dawn on me that you weren't trying to rewrite history but that it may have to do with the movie you quoted from.

By the way - I'm from Baden Wuerttemberg and now live in southern Indiana.
