Question Do I subtract the fibre count from carb count?

I hope someone can help me with this one. I just saw a loaf of bread (Betty Light 80 % WHole Wheat Bread) that has a total of 13 g for two slices, and underneath that it lists "Dietary Fibre 5.2g" Does this mean I get to deduct the 5.2 from the 13 yto come up with a new (nice and much lower!) total of 8g? I'd love to be able to buy bread off the shelf (without having to pay a premuim) that is low enough for the occassional sandwich. If anyone knows, I;d LOVE to hear from you!
Thanks,
Kathy

yes you do subtract the carbs....but that's still a lot of carbs for one slice! Also, I'd bet if you checked the label, you'd find processed flour...and lots of trans fats!

I'd do without or buy LC.....so far, I'm doing without!

Thanks CindySue,

It's actually two slices for the total- so does this mean I subtract the fibre from the carb total? Just want to make sure- don't want to screw anything up! I know it's a lot of carbs even at 8 for two slices, but I'm thinking it would be for those days when a sandwich (on the road) will keep me out of a resturant! Thanks so much for your advice!
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

The fibre may have already been deducted. Here in Australia, the fibre is always deducted first, and I for one, fell for it early on, assuming I could deduct the fibre.

You may be able to tell from the full nutritional info. Carbs and protein have roughly 4 carbs per calorie, and fat has approx 9. Try either doing the sums, or posts the full nutritional info here. Of course, just to confuse us, sometimes that doesn't help, because they don't include the fibre calories. (That's what the manufacturers of black soy beans do, leading to much confusion.)

Good point Rosebud! I keep forgetting that some do subtract the fiber and some don't.

Flattery'll get you everywhere, Kathy!

Well, as long as they haven't done anything naughty like not include the fibre calories (enough to make your head spin ) it looks okay. The calories (not including the fibre) come to 75, which would indicate they have not subtracted the fibre.

I'd still be cautious about eating it. For occasional use though, it sounds okay.

Cheers.
