Default Cramps, cramps, cramps!

No, not that kind. For the past few weeks I've had muscle cramps everywhere. Reaching to scratch the small of my back will cause cramps in my shoulder. A morning wake-up stretch will cause cramps in my neck. Teasing the cat by grabbing her tail with my toes will cause my toes to cramp.

I've been on the Atkins Diet for two months. I drink a lot of water and eat a lot of salted nuts so I don't think it's an electrolyte problem. I rely on fish for protein because I don't eat animal meat.

Any ideas what could be causing the cramps?

You could try adding in a calcium/magnesium supplement in a 2:1 ratio. You can have 1500/750 a day, and divide the doses.

Potassium may also help with muscle wearyness.

When a lot of water gets flushed out of the body, these minerals get flushed out and can cause the type of cramping you are describing.

I also recommend use of Morton Salt Substitute to help get potassium. USE IT WISELY! I was getting the same cramping (no, I can't have the other kind! LOL ) until I adopted its use. I use 1/4 tsp with a packet of splenda in a glass of water both in the morning and in the evening.

I have also made sure I supplement both calcium and magnesium. Sodium doesn't seem to be a big problem for me to get so I don't suppliment that unless I am putting a couple hours or more on my bike or unless I notice I have put out a lot of effort during the day.

I have suffered with muscle cramps all over my body including my neck and even my head for years.I have fibromyalgia.Since I have started Low Carbing they have gone away(touch wood)...do you have fibro?
Calcium, magnesium and pottasium are definitely things you should start taking right away,as they should help with your cramps.

No but it runs in the family. My mother has fibro. I bought some grocery store brand of Magnesium, calcium and zinc. Too soon to know if it will work.
