Default Alcohol question

I asked this one in the Newbies forum too, but maybe someone here will have some info. Is it okay to drink things like vanilla stoli or other flavored vodka's or do they have added carbs?

I have been a bartender for 20 years, so this is a fairly well educated guess. If it doesn't taste sweet at all, then it is probably ok. I have had the Absolut Vanilla and it didn't seem sweet at all to me. Just good vanilla flavor. I would be about 99% sure that they would not contain any significant carbs, if any at all.

Not true - I am friends with a bartender and one Sunday nite when the bar was dead, he and I went through all of the bottle of rum and vodka - flavored and regular....and the ones that are flavored, vanilla vodka and rum, citrus and berry flavored, all had 2-3 gram of carbs per ounce - versus the plain vodka and rum that had zero. Even if they dont taste sweet, they have carbs.

If you are going to drink, I would definitely stick with the unflavored liquors.

How could you tell the carb amount by looking at the bottles? They don't put the nutritional info on them.

I have requested nutritional info from many flavored spirits manufacturers and all flavored vodkas have carbs.

I will rephrase that to cover my bum... flavored Stoli, Smirnoff, and Bacardi rums have carbs.. these are a few off the top of my head that I know I have contacted.

My bartender friend has the nutritional info chart for the alcohols that his bar stocks. There are a few types of liquor that do put the carb count on the bottles...cant remember which ones though.

Hi Beans,

Do you recall how many carbs per 1 oz for the stoli, absolute flavored vodkas? I'm so bummed. I thought I found the perfect no carb drink, absolute mandarin and soda, not sweet, but not like drinking a martini either!

At home I'll stick with vodka and diet tonic, but I really get tired of rum and diet coke when I'm out!

Another thing to keep in mind -- even low or close to no-carb alcoholic drinks like white wine can stall some people. Alcohol is burned off before carbs/fat, so weight loss can be delayed. It's a very individual thing, but it definitely stalled me. I was drinking a couple big glasses of white wine most nights during a 5 week stall. Once I decided to quit my weeknight wine drinking the weight started to come off again, with no other change in my diet. Still drink wine on the weekends, though -- I'm not a saint.

"Not true - I am friends with a bartender and one Sunday nite when the bar was dead, he and I went through all of the bottle of rum and vodka - flavored and regular....and the ones that are flavored, vanilla vodka and rum, citrus and berry flavored, all had 2-3 gram of carbs per ounce - versus the plain vodka and rum that had zero. Even if they dont taste sweet, they have carbs.

If you are going to drink, I would definitely stick with the unflavored liquors."

I have been a bartender for 20 years, and I have NEVER seen a bottle of liquor with this information anywhere on the bottle.

I've never seen it either, but I just saw a news story that the government (US) is considering making this mandatory, just because to the "low carb" claims some are making. It seems they were considering this for spirits and beers, but not wines.

Drinksmixer.com has nutritional info for many spirits, and mixed drinks.
