I would like to know why on atkins you cannot have aspertame? For the first two weeks i was going off of what my mother told me from the book, she missed the part about aspertame, so i was drinking diet sodas and such i still lost 15 pounds on induction and am still loosing? so why can we not have the aspertame??

Hi there,

A coupleof reasons for Dr A suggesting no aspartame.

1. For some people it does cause slow down in weight loss
2. It has negative side effects for others (upset tummy or headaches)

Atkins prefers splenda as the artificial sweetner to use. It's more about the saftey/ health side of things than the effect it will have on weight loss.

if you have no trouble with it then it is fine to carry on.

Lesley

It's not that it's a major no-no. There are two main reasons for choosing not to eat aspartame: 1) for some people it stalls weight loss 2) aspartame has been found to cause cancer. Also, during induction you're trying to wean yourself off of sweets. If you're drinking diet sodas a lot you might be more tempted to maybe cheat. Plus, aspartame is a chemical, and do you really want to be consuming tons of chemicals?

You consume tons of cemicals a day even on atkins thats not my problem i was just curious to know what the effects were, as for aspertame causing cancer i have never heard that? interesting new fact for me, i have been using aspertame in LARGE moderation and still am loosing good amounts of weight, i am very close to my goal weight now, i am 128 and i want to be 110 so i have 18 pounds to go, not too much longer! i have been off of induction for a while i am in owl right now. i have found interesting and new ways to keep my diet going while also still having some treats.
