Default overweight and snoring (sleep apnea)?

Does any one experience this? And what can be done for it? And if weight is lost, will it go away? I have heard that being overweight can cause this...
Recently Iv'e been snoring says my DH, and last night I actually was forced awake because I couldn't breathe in my dream, and when I woke up I actually could NOT breathe untill I sat up! I could get air in but not out! It was very frightening....!!! Needless to say I was afriad to go back to sleep. I avoided laying on my back and fell asleep about an hour later, and slept sound... but how do I make sure I don't rollover onto my back during the night. This has never happened before.

Yup, sleep apnea is closely associated with being overweight. From what I've read, it seems to be related to fat around the neck and thick chest walls obstructing breathing. And in fact, the number one treatment is to lose weight! So keep working and hopefully you'll get over this.

Look at this google search for some more info: Overweight and Sleep Apnea

Hope that helps!

I had it, bad.

I lost my weight, and it went away. I am still snoring a little, but I am still a little over weight. The apnea is gone though, and I feel more rested then ever.

I even had that ugly aweful sleeping machine that you stuck on your head every night. I think that was the number one motivator to lose my weight.

Hi Colbyjax.
I'm glad you lost your weight and the apnea along with it! Did you ever wake up and be frightened by it? I found if I sleep on my back it happens more often.

I'd wake up out of breath. There was NO way I could sleep on my back. I had to sleep on my stomache. If I didn't, I'd stop breathing all night.

It's a serious condition, and if you have it, you NEED one of those machines. It made me sleep like a baby, but took away all of my ego. If you don't use one, you could risk serious heart problems from high blood pressure, among other things.

According to my husband, I have totally stopped snoring since starting low carbing and losing some weight, despite the large amount of weight I still have left to lose. I don't know if I had sleep apnea -- I may have but I was never tested -- but I certainly snored. I used to wake up several times a week and find my husband had retreated to the guest room because of my snoring. That has not happened in months and months -- a very nice benefit of low carbing.

I also had it bad when I was 350 but for a year now I've been much better and at my last sleep study (two months ago) they told me I didn't need a mask! I was warned though, I might have symptoms return is I stay at this weight... I plan on losing more though
