Default Splenda is disgusting

Spenda is disgusting. I tried making peanut butter cups. I tried making cheesecake. In both instances the taste was so horrible I threw them out. For the rest of the day I was stuck with the fake-sweet residue taste in my mouth. I could find nothing to get rid of the taste. I would rather stick with real sugar and watch my carb intake than try to choke down those horrible recipes. Just thinking about those peanut butter cups makes we want to retch.

Luckily the Atkins induction has halted my carb addiction and I don't feel the urge to eat sweets.

Have you tried stevia? Some people who can't stand splenda find that they prefer the taste of stevia. I can be found in both liquid and powdered form.

Maybe you're using too much Splenda?? I find that the taste is fine when used in smaller portions as it is less likely to over power other flavors . Just a thought!

I agree! The flavor is okay, it is just that HORRID after taste! My husband and I both almost threw up! I have looked for stevia, but I am not finding it anywhere. Do you have to buy it in specialty shops or online? I have found things sweetened with manitol are very palatable, but have heard a lot of people don't like it. Is it okay to use as a sweetener, or is there something I am missing?

Keep in mind while looking for stevia that it has not been officially approved to be marketed as sweetener yet, so it is sold as a "supplement".

Manitol is a sugar alcohol (there are many others like sorbitol, etc.). Many people like the taste of sugar alcohol, however many people also have stalls because of it, and if too much is eaten it can cause, ahem, "the runs".
however, it does not stall all people so if you like the taste and treasts made with sugar alchohols (including many many low carb bars and candies) don't make you stall, then more power to you!

I have been treating myself to more and more of the Low-Carb bars. Not a ton of them but sometimes I'll have two in one day!!

They definatly please my sweet tooth and have not caused a stall. I was thinking just the other day that they complete my LC WOL. I have nothing that I miss about my old eating habbits. A LC bar and a cup of flavored coffee is a great guilt free treat for me.
I used to go for the big cream filled cookie sandwiches and my wife would give me hell about it. Now I have a good "candy-bar" and she has one too!

There is also a sweetener that not many people know about, but it's called Trutina Dulcem. It's made from Kiwi, but is low glycemic. It is a TON sweeter than regular sugar so when using it, you start off with just a sprinkle then go from there. Per gram (weight) it has 1 gram of carbs. But, again, you only use a very small amount so it winds up being about the same as granular splenda in the long run. Anyway, they have a website (trutinadulcem.com) if you interested.

I don't dislike splenda, but agree that it does have a slight aftertaste. Trutina doesn't at all, IMO.

Good luck. Jill

P.S. I thought Stevia was pretty rank and had a major aftertaste. For some reason it reminded me of black licorice, which I hate. But if you want to try it, it's in most major health food stores as opposed to buying trutina only online.

Default Surprised you find an aftertaste!

For me Splenda Rocks! - I think it tastes exactly like sugar and I don't experience any aftertaste at all. I've never made anything with Splenda that wasn't yummy.

The quality of Stevia varies from company to company. I have used both Sweet Leaf Stevia+Fiber and KAL Extract Powder w. no problem. But, I have generally avoided less refined Stevias which are sold in some stores.

KAL extract powder is listed as 1357 servings ~ 28 mg/serving. If a package has significantly larger servings...it is probably not to well refined.

I, too, have found the taste of Splenda off-putting because of the aftertaste. I will say however, that when Splenda is incorporated in creamy items then the aftertaste (for me) seems to disappear.

I like Stevia (but then I'm a HUGE fan of black licorice ) and I use it quite a bit. I don't use much of it because it is verrry sweet and that helps.

Splenda in manufactured products (drinks) seem fine to me, but I rarely use it in baking/eating anymore....

When I need a sweet treat, it's usually berries with real whipped cream (with a little stevia in the whipped cream )

I am noticing that as time goes on, my desire for artificially sweetened items is lessening....woohoo, you gotta love this WOE

I managed to find Splenda this afternoon (at last) in a specialist health food store in the UK, just in time to start my diet. I decided to stick my finger in, just to try the taste, and found myself eating my entire days allowance with a spoon.......I feel like quite a weirdo now, because I think its delicious!

BYM,

Don't feel weird because you like it.....like so many things it's just a matter of personal preference. I, personally, like Stevia, probably because it HAS a licorice taste, which I love. But many other people don't like it. One of those, Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV) things.
Glad you were able to find it, and that you like it!

Marjan

Like another poster said, "maybe you were using too much Splenda." Remember, the stuff in packets is more concentrated and equivalent to the sweetness of 2 teaspoons of sugar. The pourable kind from a box sweetens spoon for spoon with sugar.
