Lightbulb Eureka! Found that carb culprit

This is my second week on Atkins and I stalled out this last week. I was adding more veggies week 2 and hovered around the 212 mark. I increased activity and STILL stalling out. So I pulled out my list of daily foods (again) and went to FitDay and actually calculated my carbs. Woops.. I had been eating 4 big stocks of celery in morn and afternoon as snacks. I almost keeled over......... 8 celery stocks are NINETEEN CARBS!!!!!!!! Gasp! I went to me list of accepted foods and realized it was celery ROOT I could eat.

So I am relieved that I checked. I'm sending this as a reminder to the other newbies to really check their food. I'll be using FitDay everyday now....

Although I don't use fitday, I have looked in several food counters and found that one celery stalk is 2 g of carbs and 1 of fiber (1 g eec). Are you sure that fitday said a celery stalk is that much?

I have never seen anywhere before that said celery is bad....

Yap. Fitday says 8 raw celery stocks are 19 carbs!!!! This is stocks of 11 inches--the large ones.

Is this wrong? Is celery root the same thing as stocks of celery? Help!

Check Fitday again and see if those numbers included the fiber. The carbs in celery are about half fiber. I think that when you subtract out the fiber you will find that your eight stalks of celery are closer to eight grams ECC.

Subtract the fibre?? Well, no I didn't do that. I didn't even know you were supposed to. This is how new I am at this... Guess I better read the book a little closer this time.

So celery is not the culprit???? I better check my foods again. Sigh.......

It could still be the celery!

8 stalks are 19 less 9 grams of fibre, so you're still looking at 10 carbs for those 8 stalks.

If you are still on induction, my guess is you are eating much more than 20 carbs.

Thanks you guys! I would never have realized that that fibre fact without you all.

As well, when I took out the celery I hovered between 19-22 carbs per day. So celery (for now) be gone.

Induction sucks, but so does the alternatives--being too large to enjoy life and headed towards disease and illness. yuck!

Try some Zuchinni slices for a snack, you can put thin slices of cheese, or cream cheese on it and once out of induction, almond butter or I have a tomato Pesto, that's low in carbs I just spread enough on to cover it, not gobs of anything, they are very satisfying and low in carbs.

And don't forget, your not going to steadily lose, it is normal to slow down or pause, so don't fret too much about what it may of been.

Good Luck Kathy

Here's another possibility...

You're not doing anything wrong and you're not stalled.
You started out wanting to lose about 80 pounds. So far, you've lost 8. That's average weight loss during the 2 week induction period (10%) and perhaps your body is simply catching its breath after such a quick loss.
It's very common for the body to pause after that first 10% loss and for no further weight loss to occur for a few weeks. This doesn't mean that you are doing something wrong...it's just part of the weight loss process!
Going 2 grams over the 20 gram limit isn't likely to make that much of a difference and going below 20 won't help you lose any faster, so instead of completely getting rid of the celery, maybe have half as much?

Lisa-- this is a good thing to remember! I think you may be right and I won't get disheartened. Actually, I kind of figured this might be what's going on, so wasn't too worried. Just wondered what was UP with the celery.

But thansk for the encouragement. I need lots of it.

Oh My Goodness!

This thread just put me in a panic for a minute there...cuz I eat celery frequently and I'm in the 2nd month of Induction!

I just checked my "Atkins Diet Revolution" book and celery is in Induction. Look on page 125 under the salad veg category.

I mean chicken salad just isn't as yummy without chopped celery...

HAHA. Sorry to get everyone in a dither!

Now for the other question...is celery STOCKS the same as celery ROOT? I live in the Arctic and veggies aren't that varied. These are the same thing, right?
