Default how do you figure

How do you figure out the glycerine on the protien bars. I heard that you subtract the glycerine and the fiber from the carbs to give you net carbs but for the life of me I don't see glycerine listed on there? am I nuts?

You might see words like "glycerol, maltitol, sorbitol or xylitol". They are all sugar alcohols and considered inert - that is, that they aren't supposed to cause insulin release or raise blood sugar levels. Sucralose is the stuff that Splenda is made of.

The net carbs (or Effective Carb Count) is what remains when you take away the fibre and sugar alcohols from the total carbs. The bars can legally be listed as having an ECC of 2-3 carbs while actually having about 17 - 20 grams of carbs including the sugar alcohols.

There's a great article on Sugar Alcohols under "Low Carb Tips" on the orange bar at the top of this page. Or do a search for that phrase on this site. There are lots of threads about them.
