Smile New Atkin's Girl seeking support

Hey everybody,

I'm new here. I've been reading the posts and they are really motivating. They also put my mind at ease when I am constantly hearing about how unhealthy low carb eating is. I just started the Induction today. I am going to stick with one meal plan for one week and see how it works. I also have junvenile diabetes so once I learn how my body adjusts to the new meal plan I will add more variety to my menu. How do this sound for the time being though...

Breakfast- 4 eggs cooked in 1 tablespoon olive oil

Lunch- 1 can tuna (each can has about 37.5 grams protein)
2 tablespoons real mayo

Dinner- 1 can tuna
2 tablespoons real mayo

I know this is somewhat limited for the moment but I feel I need to be as consistent as possible right now in order to get my bloodsugars back undercontrol and I need something convienent since I'm a college student. My question is....is it too much protein?? Too much or not enough fat?? Does this seem all right for induction??

Thanks for all and any advice

Hi There

I am not doing Atkins right now but I was and am quite familiar with the rules. I checked out your menu plan in fitday and it looks ok. I don't know if you will want to snack or not you might want to plan for those in case you get hungry mid-afternoon or after dinner.

Do you have an account at FitDay, if not is a free service and you can track your food intake, exercise, goals and more.

The thing that jumps out at me is NO VEGGIES. Also, you don't list how much water you are drinking. You have about 100 grams of protein and around 100 grams of fat. You need to get some carbs in there.

By the way, here are the ratio's that everyone seems to agree are about right.

about 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbohydrates

Hi Chloe!

You can find out how much protein/fat/carbs etc. that you're eatting by going to www.fitday.com and plugging in your menus.

Check mine out by clicking on the journal post at the bottom of this message.

p.s. in the newbie section there's a thread on newbie mistakes - you might what to check it out. I learned a lot there like: eggs have carbs, coffee & tea have carbs, aspartame might need to be avoided, only 3-4oz. of cheese, etc.

Hi Chloe and welcome!

I agree with everyone above. Low carb does not mean NO carb, even if you are a diabetic. You need those veggies. Have you had a chance to visit our diabetes forum yet? Lots of information there.
If you don't have it already, I'd also like to encourage you to pick up a copy of Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution diet. It's written by a doctor who is a type 1 diabetic like yourself and is low carb specifically for diabetics. There is a LOT of very good information in there and he addresses some problems that are specific to diabetic low carbers. I put it on my "must read" list for any diabetic, whether newly diagnosed or having lived with the disease for many years.
You're wise to keep to a similar meal plan until you know how this is going to affect your blood sugars. Keep a close eye on your blood sugars as they are sure to come down quite a bit with a big reduction in carbs; you don't want to wind up with a hypo episode.
And last..work closely with your doctor on this; dosages and even types of insulin may need to be adjusted and sooner than you might think.
