Default Fiber suggestions needed!

Hello everybody

I am in need of fiber. I would rather not take any more pills, theres too many already. I am anemic and take iron supplements, which are very constipating. I bought the "sugar-free" orange flavored metamucil yesterday. I searched the container for any mention of sugar substitutes, but there was no mention. I got home and looked on the internet and it contains aspartame. Yuck! What does everybody use?........................Thanks..B

I like FlaxOMeal hot cereal. You'll find a lot of information on it in the products forum. Atkins recommends ground flaxseed or psyllium.

Drinking lots of water also prevents being stopped up.

I find that spinach - especially cooked - and flax seeds work wonders!

Decaf green tea works wonderful to make me regular. I drink it hot with a .5 packet of splenda, and within 30 minutes I am in the bathroom. I have had t odrink 2 mugs some days to *aid* i nthis area, but it always works and I never have those horid gas pains and burny bowel movements.

I know, TMI.

You could try the sweetener called "Fiberfit". It uses liquid Splenda and contains fiber. Kill two birds with one stone. You can get it online.

Default Psillium Husks

Atkins recommends Psillium husks as a suppliment to help counter constipation. They are dry but easy to swallow with liquid. I have taken a tablespoon right after meals when necessary. But you must drink some extra water when you use Psillium. Water is the best medium for alleving your problems; a necessity in fact. Psillium will give you the fiber you need. It isn't expensive and it works.

Coarse wheat bran also works. I haven't found any of that yet but I do have Psillium that I got at a "Health Food" store.

I also have, at times, used a stool softener. It is not a laxative, in that it does not cause the colon to spasm. It does bring water where it is needed and should help you. Some people become rather fanatic about anything that isn't "natural"; but I don't think stool softener will do any harm. It is far better than the alternative.

Good Luck!

Default FiberCon

I know you don't want to take any more pills, but I find the most convenient way to get my fiber is with FiberCon tablets. They're pretty small. I also eat a lot of leafy greens, which help.

I find that drinking a good cup of coffee... moves things right along for me. Works like a charm - every morning.

I started out taking psyllium husks, but there are so many more appetizing ways to reach the same end, so to speak. Many of them are mentioned above. My personal favorite is Flax-O-Meal cereal, which to me is a lot more comforting than a glass of psyllium--gulp!

I hope that with all the meat (esp. red meat) on this WOE maybe you will have less problem with anemia. Keep us posted. As you are probably aware, your pharmacist can direct you to iron supplements that are less constipating (but more expensive).

Good luck!
