Default Suplements?

Hey guys!!!

I have been low carbing since July and experienced quite a bit of success. I gained some back over the past month or so and am going to go hard again.

While low-carbing in the past I have only been taking a multi-vitimin every day. i have heard that there are many other things that a low carb dietier should be taking. What are these? What does Dr. Atkins suggest?

He has a whole chapter (and more) dedicated to supplements, as I recall....and different supplements are recommended for different health issues. Why not visit his website www.atkinscenter.com if you don't have a copy of the book.

FYI, I take the following:

A good multivitamin
calcium-magnesium
GTF chromium
Lipoic Acid
L-Carnitine
Omega 3 fish oil
CoQ10

Cool

I went out and bought a bunch of supplements that my friend suggested, and it seems to be a lot! She lost over 60 lbs. on Atkins taking these supplements, but is it really necessary to take all of them? Thanks

Atkins essential oils
Atkins dieter's advantage
Atkins basic 3 multivitamin
Atkins basic anti-ox
Atkins basic enzymes
Milk Thistle
Magnesium
Calcium
Glucosamine
MSM
L-Glutamine

Wow that seems like a lot to me but I am not really sure what is good. I am taking a multi-vitimin as well as fish oil supplement.

Gonna keep researching and see what is out there.

I was briefly a patient of Dr. Atkins a while back, and his core recommendations were:

Atkins Basic 3
Atkins Essential Oils
CoQ10
Carnitine

From there he would add based on other problems such as joint pain, high blood pressure, etc... but these recommendations were individiualized. If cost is an issue (when isn't it? ), you may want to just add some essential oils to your multi. You could take his Essential Oils supplement, but I like a product called Coromega. If your multi doesn't have about 200 mcg of Chromium picolinate, you may want to add that (and that one is cheap ). CoQ10 is great for heart health, but it can get pricey, as does Carnitine. For what it is worth (notta), I take:

Life Extension Mix Caps
Life Extension CoQ10
Coromega
Life Extension Alpha Lipoic Acid

Mahoney - Have you tried the Carnitine liquid? It's 1000mg/TBSP and it doesn't taste yucky at all.... similar to Coromega....orange-y. Comes in a 16-oz bottle for ~US$15.

No, but I'm going to look for it. I did a quick search for "Liquid Carnitine" on vitaminshoppe.com and got 3 hits, but it doesn't indicate anything about flavoring. Do you know the brand name off hand?

Thanks, Bob

Angry Ugh!

I guess I'm taking way too many supplements! I should've waited to get these supplements until I started reading through this forum, that's for sure. I think after I run out of them, I'll just stick to a good multivitamin, calcium, magnesium, and coQ10. I'm sure it'll save me a bunch of money!

Thank you everybody!

Yaseruzo~!

Just about any nutrition store should carry liquid L-carnitine... I think my brand is "NOW". They're probably all palatable...or else they'd never sell any!!

I'm taking:

mature multi (no iron)
calcium (with other stuff)
vitamin E
Co-Q 10
vitamin C
fish oil
garlic
81 mg aspirin
chromium
PABA
grapeseed extract
evening primrose (or borage, depending)
ginkgo biloba

And I think I need to add a few that are not covered as fully as I'd like - magnesium being one that seems underrepresented. There are a few in the lists provided by Dr. Atkins that I haven't acquired, yet. However, I'm seriously considering buying his formulas in the hopes that it might decrease the number of pills I take each day.

I take Fish oil capsules (or flax liquid), Carnitine, Q-10, big power multi vite and vitamen E. BTW, studies in the US at McLeans Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital have found evidence of mood improvement by taking enough of the Omega-3's. Studies for depression etc....I figure in these crazy times I can use all the 'lift' I can get. (smile) I also think it's important to get your supplements from a credible supplier as their are quality differences. Leslie
