Question Egg, Chicken & Shrimp Salad from deli

I just can't think of anything forbidden, except for extra celery & onion, in ordering my salads from a Deli. Can anyone tell me if there is anything to watch out for in eating a salad that was preprepared? ( only mean Egg, Shrimp & Chicken salad!)

Do you mean egg, chicken and shrimp on a bed of lettuce with dressing, or egg/chicken/shrimp with celery and onion mixed with mayo?

If it's the first one, then the only thing to watch for is the dressing choices. If they offer low fat ones they will generally be higher in carbs.

If it's the second choice, the thing to watch for/ask about is what kind of mayo they use. Again, low fat will generally be higher in carbs. Do they put filler in? As a kid I was taught to put breadcrumbs into egg/chicken/tuna/salmon salad to help bulk it up and sop up some of the runniness. If they do that, then there are bread carbs to deal with.

Hey Angela: Thank you for replying! It just never ceases to amaze me how many "hidden" carbs are out there! I now know the reason I wasn't losing too much weight the first time on Dr. Atkin's diet at few years back! I should never assume anything ! ...

Margo, another thing to ask at the deli is what type of mayo. Most use salad dressing, like Miracle Whip, instead of real mayo. This is really high in carbs as compared to mayo.

I have even seen people add sugar when they make these salads.

rbaker:

Same height as you. Been at it for 14 months now. If you have questions about how I've been doing (since we have similar height and start weight) you can pop over to my journal. That way we can keep the topic in this egg salad thread on topic. Look at the bottom of my post and click on the little journal picture. Clicking on that on any post will take you to the journal for that member. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.
