Default Soy Milk

At what point in the Atkins program is it cool to add in Soy Milk?
Ive read the book and maybe I missed that part .

Ive never been a big milk drinker (hate the stuff!), but pre-Atkins would get a twice a year craving for a small glass. I just finished Induction and am in OWL and have been thinking that a glass would taste great. I love Soy Milk and was wondering if that would be ok at this point: I have just added nuts to my "diet".

I know the carb counts are a bit high, so I'd have to add those in, just trying to do this adding of foods in the right order...

Thanks!

I would say that soy milk is not permitted during the 2 weeks of Induction, but once a person is at OWL level, as long as your carb budget permits, then an occasional serving of soy milk should be fine. I do know there are some brands of unsweetened soy milk available, and these have only 5 or 6g usable carbs per cup. You're most likely to find these at a health food store rather than a supermarket though.

Default Unsweetened Soy

I know of 2 brands of unsweetened soy that are low carb...

Vitasoy - They have an unsweetened "creamy" soy milk...I got some at Wild Oats Market and I think you can probably find at Whole Foods too...it's a bit expensive (a little over $2 for quart)...as soy goes, it tastes pretty good and has a very good "whole milk"-like texture and I think it's as good as the Silk brand, which seems to be the "taste" favorite among most folks.

Westsoy - They have an unsweetened vanilla flavor...you can get it at Trader Joe's for $1.79 a quart. Not as good as the Vitasoy, and has a bit of the "grainy" taste most of the soy milks have, though no worse than most sweetened soy milk. I'll still buy again because I shop at TJs a lot and it's not bad, but not as good as Vitasoy.

Both of these have 5g or carbs and 4g fiber....there's been some debate whether the 5g carbs is including or excluding the carbs...so I'd count it as 5g toward your daily allowance just in case.

Hope that helps!

Brian

bdeeley-

Oooh! Thanks for all of that! Actually Im glad there is an unsweetened vanilla (I always end up adding vanilla extract to milk just to get it down) and I actually do prefer the grainier tast of Soy milk.

Think Ill hope over to Trader Joes and pick up some of that Westsoy - it sounds perfect.

Thank you!!!
