3x a week is just fine! Some people like to do every other day, and that's ok, too....just depends on what works for you. As you get more advanced and are lifting heavier, recovery can become an issue, so most (drug-free) bodybuilders just do a 3 or 4 day split.
For a beginner, 3x a week, full body, 3 sets of 8-12 reps, maybe 8-12 exercises total, keeping the training sessions to an hour or less.
BTW...I should mention (you probably know) that it's 3 non-consecutive days of lifting, giving yourself a recovery day inbetween.
