Question Fiber?

I hate to bring up such an unpleasant subject when I am so new, but it's my most pressing question. How do you all manage to get enough fiber in your diets when you are low carbing? I have always needed to be especially careful about getting enough fiber and now I don't quite know what to do. I used to have a nice bowl of good bran cereal every morning. Problem solved. But we all know about the carbohydrates in that solution. When I was reading up about low carbing, I read that flax seeds were recommended and that is another familiar solution for me. I have always just eaten them by the teaspoon full when I needed to. They don't taste bad and they do the trick. So that's what I have been doing, but I suddenly realized that they aren't exactly low carb, either, at least not in the amounts I have need to eat (about a quarter to half cup I day, I would guess).

Any suggestions?

Darcy

Default Is it actually a problem yet?

Or are you anticipating one?

There are actually a lot of veggies (and therefore fiber) in even the most restrictive LC plan (Atkins).

And, water. Lots of lots of water.

Oh yes, it's a problem. I anticipated it from the beginning and started munching the flax seeds right away. I kept increasing them for about 4 days until it felt right. I drink gallons of water. I have done that for years. I always say that water replaced cigarettes in my life. After I quit smoking about 7 years ago, I would leave my house and think instead of "Where are my cigarettes?", "Where is my water bottle?"

They have low carb tortillas that have 9 grams of fiber out of 12 grams leaving you with 3 ECC. Thats a good bargain. You can make a breakfast burrito or throw tuna in it. I also hear some people use fiber supplements. Fiber was a very good friend of mine before LC with all the high carb options, but even now I'm able to still keep close contact and manage our friendship by eating the good carbs.

Talking Thanks!

I will check out those tortillas. I have tried on and off for years to get my fiber from veggies and fruit alone, but it never works very well. I always end up having to throw some grains in the mix. I am hoping that maybe after I am comfortable with my size and my carb intake that I can add my bowl of bran cereal back into my daily life. It has really been the only thing that I have always been able to count on. But for now, I will try to increase my veggies as well.

A lot of us use psyllium husk powder, which is the ingredient in metamucil minus the sugar and extra cost. You can drink it mixed with water, blended into a protein shake, or mixed with yogurt. Someone even posted that they turn it into a mushy "hot cereal."

I get enough fiber by having some berries plus at least three servings of veggies a day. ( At least that's what I aim for. )

Default Need to go shopping!

I am writing down "Psylium Husk Powder" even as I type. . .well, not quite, I can't write and type at the same time.

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

They are a tad more expensive, but I get psyllium husk capsules. Easier for me to get down.

I will shop for all three! The tortillas sound like the tastiest suggestion, but the powder and the capsules sound like something I could have daily. I appreciate all of the input. I am really trying to resist saying that I will let you know how it "goes". But, I guess I just said it, didn't I?
