Default body temp, what's normal, what's low?

Hi, I read somewhere else on this board that measuring body temp was a good way of tracking your metabolism. So, I thought I would, to see if I was managing to move mine up.
Well - my morning temp is 97.1, which seems low to me - and it only went up to 97.8 when I'd been doing moderate cardio for 30 minutes - reading taken 10 mins later, but before I drank any water.
But are these really low or are they normal?
Thanks, Jay

You're readings are somewhat normal. If you were taking a fat burner (stacker) your body temp would be warmer than that. I would advise you to talk to trainerdan over at the exercise forums/general exercise or CDK

He'll be able to help ya out too!

The normal body temperature is 98.6 and is one of those things that is pretty steady in all healthy people. It does vary throughout the day and starts to go down some during the evening. If I were you I'd take it again around noon to see if it reached at least 98. Anything below 97.5 is considered low and may affect your rate of weight loss.

I've been on L/C many times, or I should say, I've gotten off track many times, as I acknowlege this as THE way for me and when I became hypothyroid my temperature was often 96 something. When I definitely came off meds last fall my temperature read exactly 98.6 for the first time in maybe 3 years and I had no problem losing weight. Later I stalled and when I took my temperature it was around 97.4 every day.

BTW, contrary to popular belief, aerobics are NOT the best way to raise metabolism and, therefore, body temperature in a significant way, in fact an excess will LOWER the output of the most active form of thyroid hormone (T3) which determines our metabolic rate. Try weight training. I couldn't lose at all and I started a simple and short daily program two weeks ago and have been losing again and when I take my temperature during the day it's over 98 .

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm scared of ECA stackers, so I think I'll avoid those.
Interesting about your temperatures Raquel, when you were losing and when you weren't. I've started weight training too, my cardio is really keep fit and to exercise my dogs.
I've been taking my temps several times during the day and they've never got up to 98. I'm really nervous about seeing the doctor about it, dread the 'what are you going on about' reaction, but would really like to feel energetic instead of tired and lose weight too.

Since I went through the whole 'rigamarole' of thyroid, I strongly urge you to do as much reading about it as you can before you set foot in your dr's office. It's very important to know which type of test he's going to order (a complete "thyroid panel" with antibody count is best) as a GP for instance might just order a TSH test which is not the only indicator of a thyroid defficiency or problem.

A good place to start is here: www.thyroid.about.com. This is the most complete website on the subject. You will find all kinds of articles and interviews with different medical authorities (any from alternative/complimentary medicine with advice on how to improve thyroid function) and links to other sites/sources. There is also a forum with boards that include all subjects related (and even some unrelated ones) to thyroid with a "welcome wagon" for newcomers.

Even if you happen to have thyroid problems, contrary to what traditional doctors would tell you, many are temporary and there is the possibility of improving your thyroid function with proper diet, supplements and lyfestyle changes.

Best wishes,
Raquel
