Question Does Atkins cause or aggravate osteoporosis?

Apparently there was something on TV about that.

I didn't hear it myself, but it spooked me a little because I was on the brink of it, when I had a test 2-3 years ago and was put on meds for it.

I tried to find out about it by googling, but am now even more confused!

Any science, knowledge, insights very much appreciated!

The diet is a little low on calcium, which you need to prevent osteoporosis. You can combat this by taking calcium supplements along with the rest of the vitamins you should be taking with this way of eating.

Thanks, Stutz, I'm taking a calcium supplement, as well as a multivitamine and Omega3's, so I hope I'll be all right, because I REALLY don't want to revert to my 'regular' WOE after finally losing some weight on this program!

Karen supports the fact that the diet doesn't cause osteoporosis. The diet isn't low in calcium. Also one of the more outstanding features of Native Americans who consumed a traditional low carb diet were their outstanding bone structure.
Following a carb enforced diet their bone structure changed for the worse. We also eat cheeses, high fat yogurt, lc milk and other dairy products.

Never mind, Stutz, we're all here to learn.

Thanks, Karen and Black for your input!

When I googled I mostly got opinions of Atkins' detractors and that's no encouragement!

Default I still take supplements

1. Can't pay me to eat fish, so salmon's out.
2. Don't eat milk products.

Believe the recommendations are for about 1.4 grams / day, which is a lot of spinach.

Then Atkins can't be much fun for you!

I'm lucky, I guess, I like/love just about all the allowed food items.

I just cannot get everything where I live, but I'm not bored yet, though I would be if it was ALL meat, eggs and veggies!

There is a lot of calcium in many foods we on Atkins eat. I just had to do an analysis for a class I am in and thought I wouldn't get enough- the RDA for adults 19-50 is only 1000 mg which I exceeded. Just read the labels and check the content- we get most or all of our RDA vitamins from the foods we eat. Example- 1 oz of cheese has 202 mg calcium, 1 C broccoli has 94 mg. A multivitamin won't hurt you but you may already be getting the RDA from your foods. Remember- people who don't know the facts about this WOE are often critical!

We hear mostly negative speculation, not fact or research-derived results, about the Atkins diet in the media -- especially from dieticians. I ignore most of it.

Thank you so very much for your posts and the information.

Yes, that's what I started to think from my own efforts and that's why I put the question here!

The best thing IS probably to ignore it! But I also have to convince my GP who's very sceptical and her response was quite negative!

Anyway, thanks again!

I have had early onset osteoperosis since the age of 16. I am 20 years old now, and after low carbing since september of last year, my osteoperosis has improved, and my bone density has recovered immensely. I eat a LOT of dairy every day, including all types of cheese, whole milk, yoghurt... I eat plenty of other calcium containing foods every day as well. However I did have a high calcium intake before low carbing, so I do beleive this woe is at least partly responsible for my improvement.

BTW it was my family doctor that suggested low carbing to me to begin with.

I agree LukeA, I think that a diet with adequate fats and proteins lead to healthier bones. I don't think that calcium is as helpful as we might think. Being that I am not a doctor, I don't say anything on that subject. But since I saw the information on a Native American traditional diet, I came to that conclusion.

Thanks very much for sharing that, Luke! Makes me feel a LOT better about it!

Wow, you've lost a load! You're almost there! Wonderful! Way to go!

Thanks again, Black! for your thoughtful comment about the Native American traditional diet!

It is fantastic how so many people take the time to relate to my worries! I don't think there's anything like it on the Net!
