Default Some inquiries about Soy

First, please don't let this become a debate over whether or not soy is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I have a soy allergy.

For years I've known that things like tofu or edamame give me endless, hard painful hiccups. A few years ago I determined that the soy flour used in many Atkins low carb products affect me the same way. I do seem to be able to handle soy sauce, but that's probably the fermentation.

Lately I've been having strange, intermittent stomach spasms. Almost a rhythmic cramping. It's painful. Sometimes I throw up. It seems to be relieved by very deep regular breathing. But it comes back if I go back to breathing normally.

Now obviously, I need to discuss this with my dr. My regular appointment isn't for a few weeks and I'll definitely discuss it then. On the other hand, since it is intermittent, I decided to keep track of what I'm eating to see if I can find the trigger.

I seem to have tracked the culprit down. It seems to be soybean oil, found in a number of commercial dressings, and almost all mayonnaise, both of which have dramatically increased in my diet over the last 6 weeks of serious LC.

Ok, so that was a very long lead in, but I thought it was necessary.

What I want to know is this. Is there some property in the known phytochemicals that are generally beneficial that could be causing this? Has anyone heard anything like this?

Tonight was the determining attack, and tomorrow I'll be cleaning the culprit out of my cupboards, but I think it is bizarre, and I'd really like to come up with some more information about what might be happening and why.

OMG, BatSpit, I thought I was the only one that had this problem with soy. It is so aggravating because it is almost impossible to find anyone that doesn't think soy is so great!

I know it is hard to find any product that doesn't use soy in some form.

Now when I have what I call my "gallbladder attacks" I get this rythmic spasms, with a little pain, and it takes a while to subside. I am wondering if this is what you are getting? It is right under my rib cage on the right side. I was checked out thoroughly and they can't find anything "really" wrong, so I try to stay away from the triggers and ignore it. Haven't had it in about 18 months now.

WoHoo! I have a soy-sister! I've never met ANYONE who had this problem before! Yay! I'm not a mutant!

Ok, maybe we're mutants together.

Mine seems to definitely be a stomach thing right now as it is very definitely on the left side, pretty much where you'd put your hand if you were running and got a stitch. It actually improves when I'm moving around. Weird hmm?

I don't have a gallbladder any more, so it certainly isn't that.

Thanks so much for posting. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.

I avoid soy as much as possible; the things I have read about it's toxins and estrogen, whether true or not, worries me. Besides, I don't need soy in any form to survive and be happy and content.

I avoid soy as much as possible too, but like 322432 it's because of the things I've read about it....and I hate the taste!

I also have a friend that can't tolerate it tho. Sounds like pretty much the same symptoms as you two are describing.
