Hy Karen

Probably a dumb question but Quaker cinnamon squares toasted oatmeal says:

Carbs per serving 48g
Dietary fiber 5g
soluble fiber 2g
sugar 14g

OTHER CARBS 29g (Please note that this adds up to 50g not 48?)

What are other carbs? And should we be careful that Quaker can not add?

It probably doesnt add up because some fiber grams are deductible - those would be non soluble ones I believe. Other carbs would be those that arent sugar or fiber - your starches and the like.

Reading labels gets confusing when they do not inform you if the fiber as already been deducted. It might be a good idea to run something like that through the Hidden Carb Counter. Then again it might also be good just to not eat something this high in carbs

48 grams is an insane amount of carbs for one food item. I hope you're asking this question for someone else. As an example, an acceptable level for me is 30 grams a day.

All carbs are not created equally. Most low-carbers get their carbs from low-carb vegetables. They also avoid sugar like the plague.

It looks like you are making some headway into low-carb eating, so the best thing you can do for yourself now is pick up a copy of Protein Power or Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - 2002 edition - and learn how insulin turns carbohydrates into fat as well as how and why low-carb eating works.
