Default Northern climate and low winter temps

Just wondered if anyone has any info on excercising in cold temps and what the difference in effect of calorie and fat burn have when compared with calorie and fat burn in temperate climates (say below the 50th parallel)?

We are just north of Helsinki, about the 72nd parallel. We're quite active outdoors even in the coldest of climates (-10 to -25c). We cross-country ski, walk, skate and go sledding in these temps.

Anyone have any references or info?

Thanks,

Cory

Cory,

Probably no meaningful difference. When I exercise in the cold, I wear more clothing. While my exposed flesh is certainly colder, most of me is warm. Now if you were exercising naked, that's another story!

I guess I was referring to the fact that when our bodies are cold, the basil consumption of calories is a tad more. I just wondered how much more they consume. Probably not much more if the exposure is for no more than a couple of hours or so.
