Question Sick & not eating...

I've got the flu and haven't been able to eat. Yesterday only 3 tiny bites of scrambled egg for breakfast (had to throw the rest out) and 1/2 a small bowl of my homemade chicken soup at night. I hope today will be better. But I was wondering what not eating will do to my system on LC? What happens to ketosis, etc. I haven't even been able to drink much water, although I do try.

I was just starting to do really well again after a long stall.

Coquina (hoping this goes away real soon now!)

Aww you poor dear.

Well not eating won't mess up ketosis since you are not eating anything. However your body's starvation triggers will start to kick in if you don't get something in there.

I know when feeling sick, you don't feel like eating or drinking anything however you really should try to drink water. Getting dehydrated isn't a good thing while sick. Try drinking some clear broth of beef, chicken or veggie.

Hope you feel better soon.

*hugs*

Thanks, Agonycat. I did try a cup of beef bouillon yesterday, but could only drink a few sips. I am working at drinking water more often, in small amounts, but I know my intake is a lot less than it normally is. I'll try to do better today.

I think those "starvation triggers" is what I was worried about. I don't know if it's because my diet is so limited right now that I can't find anything palatable. After 3.5 months on Atkins, I can't even remember what my old "comfort foods" would be in this situation. I sure don't feel like eating meat and eggs right now!

I had been sick the first two weeks of February too, but not to the stomach. All cold and congestion, sore throat yaddayadda...

My appetite went to pot! I really force fed myself for a few days and was thrilled at feeling hungry the other day as a marked sign of improvement in my health. How odd am I!?! LOL!

I really sympathize with you and hope this resolves quickly. Keep up on your H2O and eat what you can when you can.

My first instict is to say that with a decrease in calories, your body will probably shut down a bit to "reserve stores" in case the "fasting" continues. So eat calorie dense.

What about sipping on oil? Flax, extra virgin olive, Udo's?

It will give you some calories without having to chew!

MaryB, that's it exactly. It's not that my stomach is upset, I just have no appetite and the thought of food is not at all appealing. Everything tastes weird. I am trying to eat at least three small meals a day of things I would normally eat. I guess I blew my WOE, though. I just discovered that all the medicine I've been taking (cough syrup, sore throat syrup, etc.) has some kind of sweetener in it, like heavy corn syrup. Oh well. At least I'm not a sweets freak, so it won't send me off on a binge. Just mess up my metabolism for a while. But I can get right back on Atkins once I'm well.
