I agree with gwilson38 - about three days should do it. A week or more certainly wouldn't cause harm, but is probably not necessary. Even if he just went back to eating properly and stuck to it things would work out fine, but by doing the induction for a few days he can quickly flush his system and get over any withdrawal symptoms quickly. In fact, that might be the best advice - do induction until all induction symptoms are gone and you are back to normal.
Also, he might try to use this as a learning experience and ask what other choices were available to him that would have been equally or even more enjoyable that the bad stuff he had. The key question is a twist on gwilson38's sig line: "Did anything he ate taste as good as thin will feel?"
