Default Cholesterol Numbers

Cholesterol is 178
HDL is 32
LDL is 113

Now, my doctor said to exercise to raise my HDL (He knows I am low carbing and he is an advocate for it) but the nurse over the phone told me I need to go low fat and low calorie....

Now, when I laughed and told her how much saturated fats I eat everyday and thought my numbers for all that meat and butter and eggs was pretty good she told me I was going to have a heart attack.

She got so mad all of a sudden I had to tell her I was kidding... sheesh....

anyway... any suggestions on these numbers? How can I raise HDL?

Exercise is the recommened method to raise HDL. I found that going to low-carb raised my HDL a lot more than exercise ever did.

The numbers did not look nearly that good last month. After I lose some more weight I'll try cutting out the Lipotor.

Are you new to low carb by chance? The reason I ask is I have read that many time the nubmers go up as a person first starts out then goes down to regular levels as you adjust.

I raised my HDL almost 20 points in a couple months, just by starting to frequently eat salmon.

Hi Trinsdad,

You should try Omega 3 Fish oil capsules. They're inexpensive, and I credit them (along with LCing) with greatly improving my numbers.
Please try this before you go on Lipitor, etc.

Best to you,

Kristina

--and--exercise. Even if it's been a long time since you have, start walking just 30 minutes a day and you'll be amazed at how much better you feel within a week or two.

Hope to hear back on your results!

Fish oil is the BOMB! I take 6g a day.

And exercise is the other key, but not just any exercise: resistance exercise is the big deal to increase HDL. Mine went from 74 to 86, while my LDL went from 111 to 64, on a high-fat (basically Atkins), high-animal fat diet with heavy weightlifting.

Hi Trinsdad
I started eating reduced carb meals several months ago, I am diabetic. Last month I started Atkins Induction. Cheated a bit at first but on the 17th of July I went strict and also stopped taking any medication for diabetes. From the begining of the year to the middle of July my Total Cholesterol, LDL and TRG went up while HDL went down. That is when the Doc increased my Lipotor and added the Zetia.
