Default Sugar Free and No Sugar Added...

What is the difference? I know sugar free has to have no sugar per se. I know no sugar has to be something misleading about that statement. Like do they mean, no extra sugar added on top of what sugar is there already?

pretty much.

Like orange juice will say no sugar added. Its all sugar though as far as I am concerned. Who needs to add sugar to orange juice!

They do stuff like that to be misleading.

the other day I saw something that had a 3 all lit up in stars and something low carb and then you look and it said 3 net sugar carbs.

It failed to mention that total net carbs were like 7 or something. It only had 3 grams of sugar in it.

Totally misleading, and people who see it fast think ooh 3 net carbs and dont read all of it get misled.

I'm not sure, but HFCS may not count as "sugar", in the sense of "No Sugar Added."

"No Sugar Added" means they didn't add certain types of Refined Sugar to it. NSA Foods commonly contain large amounts of Maltodextrin, which is not considered a Sugar by the Government.

"Sugar-Free" means it has less than a certain amount of certain types of Sugars. It might still contain Maltodextrin, though usually not as much as NSA.

Many companies say "no sugar added", like Edy's Ice Cream for ex. But when you figure out the carbs it has around 8g per 1/2 cup. NOT OK. Also some compaies use fructose. Read the labels.

Default I'm so confused with all this ...

... that I pretty much don't eat it unless I"m "certain" of the carb count - I'm getting a lot of wonderful advice here - so thanks, everyone for posting the differences!

The way I read that as a diabetic is Sugar Free is free of refined sugars and has a carb leval less then 13 (equal to the number for 1 diabetic food exchange. "No Added Sugar" Means that the food its self (such as an apple in the apple pie) contains sugar (in its natural form) and that they have added no refined sugars to the food item.
This is how my doctor told me to decode that myth. But it could be different for just watching carbs. Be careful because sugar free is not all ways carb free. Check those lables.
