Default Glycemic Index ????

I've been trying to find some GI values for some fruits. Where can I find a fairly accurate chart? I have looked on several sites and am finding totally different answers. For example: one site shows watermelon at 72, another site shows it at 7!
Thanks,
Alli

There's a chart on the Atkins.com web site. I typed in "glycemic index" in the search engine. There were many references. Plus, Dr. Atkin's has a little paperback book that lists out the foods by carb, net carb, fiber, and glycemic index.

That explains it! I thought they were high. I saw that post too and questioned it because a diabetic friend of mine said watermelon was the worst fruit for him to eat. Thanks for clearing that up. Annie

I need to correct myself. Dr. Atkin's Carbohydrate Gram Counter book DOES NOT INCLUDE a glycemic index.

You might pick up a copy of Atkins for life. While it does not have a glycemic index. It has charts that list foods as what to eat often, in moderation as a treat. The charts are based on the glycemic index and the numbe rof carbs combined, which is called the glycemic load of the food.

Lady Belle's advice is spot on. There is a lot of misinformation about GI out there, with people thinking a shred of carrot will cause a blood sugar spike. It is important to keep GL (glycimic load) in mind and books like new glucose revolution explain this, and might be a good read later on. It can be complicated though, and I think the tables in Atkins for life provide an excelent simplification.

And remember that some tables will vary, within reason, becuase they draw on different primary studies. Individual blood sugar responses vary by person - so use GI/GL/Atkins tables as a guide, but remember to always trust your hunger-o-meter and cravings-o-meter.

I find www.glycemicindex.com very helpful - go to "data base" and type in the food you are looking for.
