Default L-Carnitine & ALA in Canada

I have been reading a lot about L-Carnitine, Acetyl L-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Even Dr.A talks about L-Carnitine. However, when I went shopping I found that I could not get L-Carnitine anywhere. I managed to buy CoQ10 but no L-Carnitine and ALA.

I finally went to a GNC and was told that it is not permitted in Canada to sell Amino acids by themselves and that the only way I can get L-Carnitine or Acetyl L-Carnitine was as part of a Protein Shake or something like that. GNC did have ALA though!

Any ideas on how I can get L-Carnitine and Acetyl L-Carnitine here?

Cheers

Well, you are close enough to head down to Niagara Falls, NY and pick up some there if you drive, but failing that, many health food stores keep that stuff for sale, but behind the counter, not out on the shelves. When I asked at mine, they had L-carnitine, though it was very pricey. Try the smaller stores that aren't chains, they may be more likely to have that stuff than a GNC.

I asked this question in the "Nutrition and Supplement" thread - see here:

http://www.diet-coach.com/showthread.php?t=172553

I've also since found it at one place behind the counter - very pricey. My doctor did say the Carnitine is available by prescription, but I will only consider that later on if I begin to stall.

It just became a matter of sheer stubborness to find it, since it's talked about so much!

If you go to Niagara Falls, NY, just cross at Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Exit off the highway at Porter and go left to Military Road. I bought L-carnitine at Vitamin City in a plaza on the south side of the road. (I think it's where the Walgreen's is, but you could find the address on the internet)

By the way, I never did feel as though it had any effect. It's supposed to help fat burning but even Dr. Atkins said that it had to be VERY BIG doses. And that would be very expensive.

I couldn't find a good enough dosage in pill form. I ended up getting a large jar of powder. I think EAS is the maker, unsure. You might try finding the powder online.

Thanks everyone. Tofi, thanks for the detailed directions I did not know it was very expensive! Well, the next time I am in the US (very soon actually), I shall try getting some and hope the border does not ask me if I am carrying any supplements or vitamins

Cheers
