Default Low Carbing and Giving Blood?

Hello, I'm scheduled to give blood next week during a work sponsored blood drive. Does anyone here have experience giving blood while low carbing? Should I up my carbs before I do this?

Hi Diana

Thanks for the response! Did you change your carbs at all that day or stay stick to your usual level?

Usually the only problem with giving blood is anemia, and you should be fine with all the meat you are eating!

Just make sure you drink enough water on the day your give.

I have this same question. There is a blood drive tomorrow and I'm wondering what you eat after? Usually they have cookies and juice. I'd probably hurl if I ate sugar like that. Any suggestions on what kind of snack I should bring with me. I really don't want to pass out or anything. LOL

Perhaps a V8 and some nuts would do the trick.

No problems giving here. The only thing I had once is that my blood pressure was too low for them to take me. I run low anyway, but was especially low that day. They advised drink lots of water and try the next day.

No special eating beforehand.

Go for it - it's a wonderful cause!

I've read recently if you get sick when giving blood to drink 16oz of water before and it's suppose to help you not feel queasy and like passing out. I've yet to try it. I start to pass out before the needles in.

I just take my own snacks. You could take some deviled eggs in a container with a good seal or some raw veggies work. I have always had the problem of feeling like I am going to pass out when I give blood even before LCing. Finally one day someone told me to let them know I need to lay down when I give and that solved the problem. If you are worried about that try laying down just as a precaution.
