Hi Tapeworm I lived in Baie Verte as a kid for two years. My dad worked at the mine when it first opened. We left in 1965. Still have a lot of good memories of the place. Living in Vancouver now.

Wow Colleen, that's quite a cooincidence... my father worked at the mine for approximately 30 years until it shut down in the 90's. He was quite lucky because he was given an early retirement package that only people 55 and older were offered... he was 54 when the mine closed but turned 55 while they were deciding on the retirement packages and because of that he qualified... just under the buzzer.
It's a small world after all isn't it, my father probably knew yours, who knows they could have been friends, you never know!

Default Tapeworm - R.O.P. Products?

Hi Tape Worm,

I noticed that you were from St. John's, so I thought I might ask you a non-low carb question: Do you know where I could find (preferably on-line) Republic of NL stickers/decals? I have a R.O.P. shirt from the downhomer site and a 'Free Newfoundland' shirt from Living Planet, but neither carry decals.

Just thought it would be neat to put on my vehicle.

Thanks,
Shutt

Pork Rinds - Also known as Bacon-ettes (spelling?). I've seen them at Marie's, Esso, etc.

Vitamins/Supplements - I take an abundance, and buy a good deal of them at GNC or wherever I can get them, as there's only one GNC in the St. John's area. I also take Glutamine Powder, which is only available there (or perhaps at a gym)

Beverages - Water, Green Tea, Herbal Teas, Decaf Coffee or Tea. Sometimes: Soda Water Rarely: Diet pop (there are a few splenda-sweetened Crush products (green, red, orange) out there now; I try to avoid the aspartame-sweetened ones.

Put a little lemon juice in your water if you cannot tolerate plain.

Tough to get all the items I was accustomed to in Victoria, BC, but I'm adjusting. The Sobeys in CBS finally got smoked tuna in a can - even if it is in water (I was used to the kind packed in oil). Makes a great snack. Turnips (not the yellow rutabagas that we grew up calling turnip) are hard to get; jicama is nearly impossible; at least there is spaghetti squash, daikon and a few other "old favourites" to indulge in.

I am living in St. John's (finally home from Ottawa, hooray!) and I have had moderate luck with LC products.

Wal Mart also carries pork rinds if you like them (as does Shopper's Drug Mart) but beware of the wide selection of LC chocolate in Wal Mart. It's dangerous!

The best LC resource I have seen in the city so far is the Whole Health Store in Sobey's Howley Estates (East End). They carry a lot of LC products (including tortillas which are better than the atkins ones, in my opinion). Also, the staff are very friendly - I mean to speak to them about the possibility of ordering LC yogurt - I don't think I can last much longer without morning yogurt!

Anyone else know of any places that carry decent LC products?

Well, although not zero carb, yogurt I have chosen is:

Source (sweetened with Splenda)
The new Newfie Brand (can't remember the name) - the plain, in my opinion, is a bit too sweet - also sweetened with Splenda
Astro Balkan Style - a whole yogurt with live cultures - not sweetened - add your own, if you absolutely need to do so.
GNC does have some LC products, but I don't usually buy them, anyway. The only "product" I get there is Iso-Pro Protein Powder, that I use with so many other things.

I've seen turnip (not rutabaga) occasionally.
I've seen jicama, but it was already mouldy.

Sun Sushi - "to die for" sashimi (no rice)
Chinese Grocery (name?) on Water Street - Shirtaki noodles
