Default Whats the deal with alcoholic drinks?

Having been a heavy drinker in the past and having started the aitkins diet. I was wondering if I would be able to have the occasional drink of lager? what are the carb counts in lager?

Hi ShadowMask, I found that I stalled out on weight loss after the first three weeks and didn't lose a pound for over five weeks. I decided to cut out my weeknight wine drinking and that broke the stall. An occasional alcoholic drink need not derail your weight loss efforts; however, frequent imbibing might for several reasons: (1) the body will burn the alcohol for fuel before carbohydrate; (2) alcohol loosens your inhibitions and makes you less discretionary about what you eat; (3) it whets the appetite; and (4) the calories in drinks can really add up.

Also, if you are a lager (beer) drinker, note that beer has much higher carbs than most other alcoholic drinks. You might look for a low-carb beer.

Cheers!

The new low carb rolling rock is better than Ultra (IMHO).

Drinking is dangerous, in more ways than one. First it dehydrates you further, so you really really need to up the water intake if you are drinking. Second, you don't burn any fat or carbs while alcohol is in your system. Third, the booze makes you more likely to cheat on the diet

For specific drinks, check out drinksmixer.com It lists the carbs for many different drinks. But don't trust it's beer numbers, they use the same number for every beer, from guinness to bud.

Hi All,
I think Thumbelina has a pretty good handle on this one.

Personally, I love to drink and it has always been the single most probable cause for weight gain in my life. I initiated a lifestyle change 15 months ago, when I started Atkins, and I eliminated all alcohol for about four months until I was sure that I had a really good grip on things and was having great success. I then added one night a week, designated as "party night" when I had no limits and no guilt drinking. I drink only 0 carb spirits and mixers. My weight loss continued for months with this arrangement. Then I added a second night and within two weeks, the loss stopped. It was the only change. I continued that way for about 3 months and said this is not working and went back to one night a week. That's how I got to where I am and it is still working. My carb intake is usually around 20-25/day.

That said, I have to get ready for party night....Yes!!!

Best to all,
T.

Just to let you know that i did not drink at all for 7months and i went down about 55 pounds but after all it was Christmas decided to have a couple of pints i had 2 pints and one shot of sambuca within about 2 hours.at this point I completely blacked out and I thought I had been drugged still do not know to this day but being female really dangerous so be careful where you are when you decide to cocktail good luckIt could have been the weight itself, down to 132 or just not drinking for a long time or the ketosis or someone slipped me something it did happen again though so eat if you are going to cheat with cocktailsHappy day to ya
