Default Psyllium Husks

Which is the best to use? Powder, gels, capsules? Where do you get it at?
Also, how often do you take it. I read one site where it said to take 6 capsules a day?????

I like the husks because I can vary the dose according to what I need each day. I just scoop some into a glass of water and stir or I mix it in with my protein drink in the morning. I figure why pay more for a pill?

I started out with 1 teaspoon a day and I'm up to a little bit under a tablespoon a day.

Whatever you decide to do, start with a low dose and gradually build up or you'll be sorry

I also take the psyllium husks (two tablespoons per day). I take it alone 2.5 hrs after a meal because it prevents the absorption of vitamins (at least that what I was told, so I assume it does the same for food).

I think you should take it alone. I put one tablespoon in a glass of water and drink it right away, then put another tablespoon in water and drink it right away before it thickens up and gets gunky.

It has no taste so it's easy to get down.

I like the taste of Metamucil. It is a little like Tang. I drink it in a tall glass of water with a straw. ( I use the straw to keep it stirred as I drink it.) I started out with 1 tsp. but soon found that 1 tbs. is perfect for me.

It doesn't taste at all, but it does really thicken up in liquid. I imagine some people would find that unpleasant but I don't. I like psyllium because you get so much fiber in a small amount.

I took the husks for the first time last night and did not really know much about how much to take.... I think I took enough considering how much I have "gotten rid of" today. How can you have so much stored up? Sorry for being gross, but I was so constipated and I really was desparate to get moving so I drank two cups of some type of herbal tea made especially for getting you to "move". It was named after some Father/Herbalist but I can't remember the name. Tasted really good, like licorace. I would drink that every day to stay regular but it says on the box "for occasional constipation" so I don't know if it would be safe to use everyday. Anyway... back to the husks I also mixed two tbs in with my Keto this morning WOAH MAMA...!!! I am no longer constipated that is for sure. Do you think mixing it with cereal blocked my vitamin absorbtion from my vitamins and Keto? I was not aware of that effect. ooops!

As far as the taste goes it reminds me of when my kids were infants and had the Rice cereal, it is kind of that texture and doesn't have any taste like the Rice cereal too.

I use psyllium (konsyl) husks which don't have added sugars or fillers, and I make . . . . . PANCAKES!!! That's WAY better than gulping the stuff, I think!

I blend with a hand mixer:
1 TBS psyllium
1 TBS cream
1 egg
dash cinnamon
1/2 tsp splenda
1/4 cup water
Then, I let it sit for 5 minutes to "absorb" a bit. Afterwards, I fry up two little pancakes in some butter. They're surprisingly good on their own, but a little low carb syrup is also nice on top.

This recipe is adapted from one by Susky on another low carb site . . . (I had to give credit where it is due! All I do differently is add cinnamon and splenda. Some folks, who are OWLing, add a litte pumpkin to the pancakes, too. Just in case you're interested!

I know that Trader Joes sells a pretty good-sized container for a few bucks. It's in with all the vitamins.

When I first started coming to this board psyllium husk powder was recommended to me for constipation...I went out and bought a huge jar of it. The next day I ate my breakfast and about an hour later mixed up my glas off the husks...sucked it down as fast as I could - but it was thick and gritty and slimy - and I promptly threw up all my breakfast! Needless to say I threw the powder away. Now I take the pills and they are not THAT much more expensive than the husks and they have worked fine. I started with one a day and worked up from there to find a "comfortable" amount. Anyway...I don't recommend the powder - it's really gross.

I mix both psyllium husks and crushed flaxseed into pancakes/mock danishes. Or into protein shakes with oil. Or with creme fraiche and Greek yoghurt...

Pyslium husk mixed with 8oz of Diet V8 Tropical. Mix it in a blender and it is quite tasty!

Been taking it for over a year and I DEFINITELY know when I miss my daily dose.
