Wink Walking in the snow distance calculator...

We are all familiar with the wind chill factor. I have devised an open source solution to the problem of calculating distance walked while there is snow on the ground.

Start with your normal distance you walked in miles. Example: 2 miles

Add .1 if the snow was 1 or 2 inches deep
Add .2 if the snow was deeper
Deduct .25 if the snow has been plowed
Add .1 if they haven’t plowed yet
Add .2 if you had to hop from tire rut to tire rut just to walk down the road
Add .01 if the ruts were firm
Add .3 if the ruts were mushy and slushy
Add .02 if the sun was blinding you more than 50% of the time
Add .01 if any cars splashed you with slush

Add the numbers to your total mileage walked and that is how far (in miles) it FELT like you walked. Your number can also be used on my new Slow-Snow-Walk Factor Chart or the Are-You-Nuts-For-Being-Out-On-A-Day-Like-This? Chart.

Thanks Mudknife -- you must have been looking out my window!! The snow has just started up again - can't tell if -30 degrees Celcius or snow that needs shoveling and messes up the roads is worse!

But good to know that "Scientifically as per Mudknife", exercising in this stuff is better exercise.

I do recall reading years ago that tests showed that exercising done in a cold climate burns more calories than exercise done where it's warmer. Of course, that assumes you stay out in it longer than the minute and a half it takes to run from the house to the car!

I think you should give yourself a few extra bonus miles for living in Michigan!

Nice calculator!
