I only have one kidney, and I am wondering if the Atkins Diet is as hard on the kidneys as I have heard. - CJ
The Atkins Induction Phase Diet allows only 20 grams of carbohydrates and relies heavily on meat, cheese and other high-protein foods. Dr. Atkins suggests that patients with abnormal creatine levels of 2.4 or greater should check with their doctor before starting this phase of his program. Individuals with only one kidney usually have normal creatine levels (normal kidney filtration). Contrary to popular opinion, high protein intake has not been found to be harmful to normal kidneys. -- Physician Ron Hunninghake, Center for the Improvement of Human Functioning International
