Thanks for posting this. Must give it a look.

It is an episode of The Money programme. And yes, having looked at the BBC website it is on nationwide on BBC2. This is their comment.

Yawn. another half hour of Atkins bashing. They tried to make out that Atkins is popular because celebs are doing it, but forgot to mention that IT IS POPULAR BECAUSE IT WORKS!!!!!!!
I feel i little peed off, i started Low carbing in march 2001 and lost about 30 pounds in 6 weeks. Nobody credits me for introducing Atkins to the UK do they, Oh No......

I missed it - firework display took priority

But I never cease to be amazed by how many people "think" they're doing Atkins but don't seem to have even read the book

hmmm well I watched it, at some points I wanted to throw my remote control at the TV cuz of some of the stuff that was said, altho to be fair, Atkins didn't get a total bashing.. still alot of untruths about it, like the unlimted cheese, and how atkins followers gorg themselves on meat (I don't know about u, but I've not gorged at any meal I've eaten since I started LCing)

But at least the 'main' atkins follower was a middle aged man, slightly overweigh and doing atkins for the right reasons (all be it, if not following it to the letter) Think of how it would have looked if it had been a skinny blonde talking about how she needed to lose 10 lbs so she was doing Atkins and after all, all the celebs do it, so therefore people will say its a faddy diet. Surely to see a business man, with all of his mables seen to be there it shows that LCing and Atkins are not just faddy diet done because the likes of Jennifer, Brad and Rennee are 'on it'.

I thought that it explained fairly well about how Atkins began his Revolusion, and the only people seen to be against the Atkins WOE were the bread and potatoe industry (ooh I wonder why )

And we have to remember this was a programme about the money that is being made out of the low carb industry, and not about Atkins, and what's real and what is media hype.

For that reason, I think it was a fair programme, a step in the right direction anyway...

Just remember.. our time will come

I've recorded it, but haven't got to watch it yet. Hopefully I'll see it over the next couple of days. I'll let you know what I think, but from the comments above, I don't think it will be too much r

I saw about the last 20 mins, and other than NO VEGGIES were mentioned at all (so whats new) I thought Atkins served rather well, I espiecally liked the restaurants that now cater for the atkin'ers at lunch time, and also how the LC beer and product industry has rocketted (mainly london) which hopefully means it will branch out through out the rest of teh UK.

I finally got around to watching the programme today. There were the usual misconceptions of no-carb rather than low-carb and the fact that you could eat as much cheese, butter, etc, etc but in general I didn't feel it was too bad. The programme was concentrating on the financial implications of the Atkins industry to the bread manufacturers and potato growers and the rise in low-carb products becoming available in the UK. Yes, it did mention various celebrities following the plan and called it a fad diet on more than one occasion but it was a lot more balanced than I thought it would be. It is also good to see that some restaurants and shops are recognising that low-carbing is becoming a lot more popular and are adapting their menus accordingly.

I was expecting Claire Sweeney to pop up any minute but instead we had Jayne Middlemiss as the "celebrity" endorsing bread! The least said about the better I think

I saw this too and wish I had recorded it at the same time so I could yell at Susan Jebb again (Never did catch what she was saying, I was too busy shouting at her tee hee)

My feeling was that it was a slightly more thoughtful programme about Atkins than we usually find. Yes, he said that it was a fad and insulted us all by saying we were all following it because the "celebs" did it, but I liked the way they went "behind" the headlines a bit back to the 1960s to point out that Atkins started before the low fat fad in the 1970s, and moreover that Atkins himself was inspired by a PUBLISHED RESEARCH PAPER IN A JOURNAL! At last!!! They are on the right track ....

I would like to feel positive and hope that this is one of the first in a series of progs and articles about low carbing which are going in the right direction. Anybody see the report on the BBC site about how they are treating people with heart disease with cholesterol now??? They are getting there ... if by a rather roundabout route.

I finally got around to seeing this programme yesterday. Like the last couple of posters I thought that this was a pretty good factual programme of its type. For us who are wedded to the plan there are always going to be things that people say that we don't like, but all in all I thought it was pretty fair reporting.

It was good to see some of the background with how Atkins started back in the 60's. It is also interesting to read how meat, cheese and egg sales are up in the UK, but that potato and bread sales are down. It is not surprising that they are trying to fight back. It is their livelyhood.

I did not like the fact that it is still thought of as a fad diet. I think this is people being in denial and not really understanding the science behind it all. Mind you, diets do come and go and I suppose they are just hopeful that this one will follow the trend. It was interesting hearing a report from the company that publish the book who indicated that all the bad press only made a small dent, for a short time, in the sales of the book.

It was good seeing a middle aged man following the diet and going with him shopping in the supermarket. I agree, calories did not seem to be important at all, which at the end of the day is not the case and the lack of vegetables was a negative aspect although I did see some in his trolly. It was good to see the pub/restaurant in the city now catering for low carbers and doing food exchanges with salad and spinach for potatoes. I hope more follow.

They also had the Carbolite people on with how they got into low carb products. It showed pallets of chocolate bars going off to Benjy's. Apparently they are flying off the shelves, so a major growth area.

The programme held my interest throughout and the closing credits came quicker than I expected.
