Default Iceberg Lettuce

I was reading in these forums and found someone state the you should avoid Iceberg Lettuce. Can someone explain why that would be? Or did they maybe not know what they were talking about?

Thanks, Amy

Not sure of the reasoning others have for avoiding Iceberg Lettuce but I do because of the lack of vitamins and anti-oxidens as compared to spinach and romane. Iceberg is mostly water...I like to get more bang for the buck and mix romane with spinach for my salads. The greener the leaf the better the punch

The only thing I've heard about iceberg lettuce is that there's no real nutritional value to it. But I eat it anyway!! :-)

Thanks for replying so quick. I usually assume that anything that should be avoided is bad or has something bad in it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong and I don't think I read it in DANDR. I will continue eating also.

Yep .. pale iceberg lettuce has little nutrition to offer except water. I've advised folks to avoid relying on iceberg lettuce as their main (and sometimes only) vegetable. There's nothing wrong with it, it's filling and the most common type of lettuce used in restaurant and fast-food salads. You just need to make sure you're choosing other veggies each day too.

I usually mix mine up with spinach. You might try that so you're getting "some" nutritional value out of it.

I usually add cheese, meat (smoked salmon, tukery, etc.), cauliflower, broccoli, radishes, and sugar free (splenda) ranch dressing. I read on the bag of lettuce that I get, they now also are adding romaine to the mixture of iceberg.

Maybe because it's nasty? I buy the prepackaged salad mixes. I hate iceberg. It has no taste. I would never eat salad if that was all I had. Also--remember to consult your atkins book. Don't just listen to us! A lot of people have modified their own version of atkins (like myself) but you can always go straight to the source himself....Dr A rules. buy the book!

I was mixing Romaine and fresh spinach. But spinach has so many more nutritional value the I went to fresh spinach.

I buy the prepackaged Spring Mix, or when money is tight I mix my own and put it in zip lock bags in the fridge. The mixed greens means a better mix of nutrients as well as just a better taste.

That is a good thing. You should always have a serving of protien when you have a carb such as salad or fruit. The protien, fiber, and fat are all things that can help balance your blood sugar and keep the carbs from entering the blood stream as gluclose quite as fast.
