Default Question regarding being sick (with flu) and Atkins

I have the flu (since yesterday) and have virtually no appetite. I have forced myself to eat what I've eaten the last 2 days. I do not feel like eating meat or veggies right now, as what I ate for lunch today nearly made me sick. What are some alternatives when you are sick? I don't want to shut my metabolism down by not consuming enough calories, but I can't "force" myself to eat like this again tomorrow. UGGH! HELP!!!

I am new at this ,but I suggest looking at receips for a cream based soup. You could make on eup yourself.....I had a few shrimp and an egg in some chicken broth earlier (like shrimp egg drop soup). YOu sould use about 800 calories of heavy cream (watered down a bit), some cheese (cheddar maybe), some shrimp and a few eggs, make it to be about the amt of calories you are normally eating in a day and make it last all day. I always want soup when I don't feel good, Maybe that'll help. I may make something like that next week...YUM!

Serena--that recipe sounds really good! Soup really _is_ the best sounding/tasting food when I'm sick, and I hadn't thought through the "what happens if you don't want to eat but have to?" question. Thanks!

Jude

I think as long as your keeping up your water, just eat what you feel will stay down, and keep it as loe carb as possible.
Luckily I have not been sick so far with being on Atkins, since Jan/03, but I can tell you I doubt I'd ever use being sick as a reason to fall off the plan, so be careful cause, I think it might be easy to do if you are not really on top of it.
Hope your feeling better soon, Kathy

Another thing that's really good in soup is butter. For me it goes down easier than cream.

Chamomile tea with butter (and a squeeze of lemon if your stomach's not upset) is really good, too. I drink that when I'm not sick.

Nobody eats much when they're sick. If you can get some calories in and soothe yourself, I think that's the best you can do.

Feel better!

Dorothy

I was sick for a weekend and tried some low carb toast but couldn't keep it down. I know the feeling that meat just won't do when you are sick. So I sent my DH out to get a few cans of chicken and stars soup. Yes, full of carbs, I know, but when you are sick, you are sick and I think the chick and stars was the one thing that made me feel better. Maybe it is a comfort-food thing, and maybe it was the only thing that my body would have accepted at the time, but it ended up helping me to feel better and I did go over my carb allowance, but it wasn't really like cheating and I got back onto the low carb wagon as soon as I felt better. So I would say to eat what you feel you should to get better and just don't go overboard on the carbs.

Jello is the ultimate comfort food for me. Try it with a little cream cheese, and dial the sweetness down a little if you really aren't in the mood for "sweet". It's got a fair amount of fluid in it too...good to help with hydration. Best of all...no bones!

Get well soon!

Sorry you're not feeling well, Kristy. I don't think that I could stomach creamy soups while sick. What about some beef or chicken broth?

I hope you're feeling better soon.
