Default Drug from Gila Monster Saliva

I happened to hear a few minutes of the Rush Limbaugh show today where he was talking about tests of a potential new drug for diabetes that is made from gila monster siliva. I'd never heard of this and did a websearch. Lots of links for recent news articles turned up, such as:

Forbe's.com: Amylin's Gila Monster...

The drug is still in the test phase. It looks very promising for lowering high blood sugars while not causing blood sugars to drop too low. It also seems to induce weight loss in diabetics.

Gila monsters, which are poisonous lizards, only eat about four times a year. Therefore, scientists reasoned that they must have some strong internal mechanism for regulating their blood sugar. That's why they came to be studied by diabetes researchers.
