Help, Please Someone!! Just started this diet yesterday. I was wondering how you can eat enough veggies when even Broccoli & fresh ones like that claim a little sugar? If the carbs say 3 & the sugar says 3 also, is it ok to eat or does everything have to be TOTALLY sugar free? I know sounds dum, but I cant figure it out. Thanks for ANY help.

Hi and there are NO dumb questions here so just ask! Broccoli is just fine to eat. You just have to be careful of lots of sugar that you find in some salad dressings, bar-b-que sauce, some fruits, etc. Just get in the habit of reading labels. If it says it's okay to have in Dr. Atkins book then it is. Make sure to read the chapter on induction as it is stricter than all other phases of the diet. Good luck. P.S. I have broccoli often!

There is sugar in many "natural" foods - that's just what they are like. No one puts the sugar in them, that's how Mother Nature makes them grow.

Fruits are generally higher in sugars than vegetables so they are not on the Atkins Induction list. Carrots are very high in natural sugar so they aren't really for Ongoing loss either.
Milk is high in sugar but cream is lower.

The Induction veggies are low on the Glycemic Index which means they don't raise blood sugar and cause insulin release.

Just trust Dr. Atkins' Induction List and eat those foods in the amounts listed. Then go and read the things he adds for Ongoing Weight Loss. Don't get hung up on the natural sugars.

You'll do fine by eating the foods in the book and not worrying so much.

HI! and welcome. THis is a great place to get support.

I found that I had a hard time getting enough carbs eating my three cups of lettuce during my induction.
I added eggs and cheese to get my carbs up high enough.

And like the other folks mentioned, its not the natural sugar in the veggies that are the problem, it is all added pure cane sugar and the high fructose corn syrups, and all those refined added sugars.
Later on, as you start to increase your carbs, you can start adding more veggies and then fruits also.

Good luck and welcome once again.

Read the book, folks! It will help you out a great deal! And it's cheap!

The atkins.com web site has some great info -- certainly enough to get you started -- but the book is indispensable.
