Default Atkins vs. Zone calories

I've been eating the Atkins way for several weeks. Many people indicate that they are not hungry and eat less food. Not me!! I tend to eat 2000 calories a day, but I do not crave junk food. I was looking at the Zone website and they recommend a woman eating about 1300 a day based on different blocks of food. My question, do people tend to lose their appetite on this diet? It seems more complicated than Atkins, but do people tend to lose weight quicker on it due to eating less calories? Or is it about equal weight lose but you can eat more calories on Atkins? I ask this because research suggests that one can lose weight with more calories on Atkins than low fat. Anyone have any idea or quess. Thanks!!!
Angie

Hi Angie! I know on Atkins you can eat lots more and lose weight. I think Atkins is superior because you don't have the cravings you get on most plans and so you can stick to it so it is easy to commit to it longterm. I do notice that since I have been here people who have left Atkins to try out other programs end up coming back to Atkins. I have no idea about the Zone. I think there is a zone site check it out. Good luck!

Peace
red

I don't know about the Zone either but I see that you are losing weight on Atkins. Is it just not fast enough? I know it's hard to wait. I'm sure you've already heard that people like you, who don't have that much weight to lose will lose it slower. I know you don't count calories on Atkins so I guess that would be one difference in it and The Zone. I think it's great that you aren't craving junk food! Like Red said, why don't you check out the Zone links on here? Honestly if I was eating 2000 calories and still losing I would be happy but I do know it's hard to wait on the pounds to dissappear. Anyway, good luck!

According to Atkins review of the Zone, he's supportive of it and states it is much like Atkins maintanance in the percentages. You can lose weight on it, but it will be much slower.

I have a few zone books and really like the look of the diet, however the measuring seems tedious to me. Also while they encourage good carbs, they let you choose what ever you want for your carb alotment including junk foods. If you are feeling hungry on Atkins and eating alot of calories, you may want to up the fat percentage. Remember Atkins is a high fat diet, not high protien. When I first started I watched my calories as well as carbs. Now I find I have problems getting in enough calories, even with 3 meals a day plus one or two snacks.

Any diet, no matter if the Zone or Atkins, it's about making wise food choices. You can spend your carbs and calories on sugery starchy foods, or have a ton of filling veggies. By discovering your lean mass and protien requirments you can keep from going way over on the protien and adding in alot of calories for only a little amount.

Hm, apparently, unlike me, you never dine on the 32 ounce thick cut of Porterhouse steak? LOL

I can't be the only one who does that, am I?

32oz geeze. I balked tonight at having 8oz ground meat. I ended up having 4oz with an egg and some ragu. I think 32 oz would not only put me extreamly high on cals, but have me OD on protien. The gluclose rush would have me knawing at my own leg

Reminds me of those steak houses. If you order the huge $50 or what ever steak and actually manage to finish it, you don't have to pay. Of course they always come with a ton of carby sides.

LOL......not sure if I should put this on print, but a few years ago, I was dining at a Prime Rib place. The deal is if one can finish 64 oz cut of prime rib, it would be free; but, if not, then the price was like 100 dollars.

Guess I felt like Scrooge that evening, and finished it. It had taken 4 hours, but I finished it.

Of course, I couldn't touch the veggies, potato, soup, or any of the other side dishes.

Thanks!!! I do eat a lot of protein. I just find meat, nuts and oil to have much more calories than oatmeal and fruit. I don't measure my food, so my calories maybe an over estimate or maybe an underestimate!! I just know from low fat dieting, if I were to only eat 1300 calories as suggested by the zone, I would be grumpy and obsessing about food. Atkins I eat, but I am not obsessing or desire junk. When I saw the Zone recommended calories, I thought this made more sense for weight loss. I'm still caught up in counting calories. Old habits die hard.

I was on and off the Zone for a good part of a year and since I have battled bulemia for the past 10 years it did not help with the binging. I was still hungry. So I would binge ... feel guilty because I had blown my cal count.

Atkins has cleared that up completely. I can eat almost all I want and not gain weight (which doesn't really equal THAT much because the foods are so filling).

The Zone was good in that I did lose weight ... but it did not control my cravings.

I hope this helps.
