No, the sticks are not necessary. They have no effect on the diet whatsoever, they are merely one of several tools one can use to indicate if you're on the right track. Many lowcarbers never use them, and lose fat and inches just fine. Far too many lowcarbers become obsessed with the sticks, whether they are or aren't "turning" or trying to get a darker shade of pink or purple. The weight on the scales, your shrinking measurements with the tape, clothes getting looser, increased energy and well-being ..... these are all superiour indicators of lowcarb success, in my opinion.
