Arrow Pedometer Challenge

Any one for a pedometer challenge?

It's pretty simple. I read some time ago in "Walking Magazine", in and article called "10K per day", I think, that the average North American takes about 6,000 steps per day. They (health experts were quoted) say 10,000 steps per day are necessary for general cardiovascular health, etc. and 12-15,000 steps per day are reccommended for weight loss.

I wear mine all day everyday and am at this point just aiming to be at or over 10K per day.

Any one with a pedometer, that counts steps not just miles or kilometers, out there want to join me? We could post our daily totals or weekly averages (which are sometimes more meaningful since we all have good and bad days) and our tips for increasing our daily steps?

Wink No takers so far

Okay so I'll start myself:

Sunday: 9.9K steps - walked to the corner store instead of driving.
Monday: 9.3K steps - busy day at work, lots of walking around office.
Tuesday: 10.1K steps - walked to one of the places I had to get supplies for work instead of taking car, paced around at my son's ball practice instead of sitting watching.
Wednesday: 12.1K steps - walked out to get lunch instead of ordering in, walked to my older sons ball game and chased my younger son around there.

will update later

I don't get paid 'till tomorrow...So, once I cash my check, I'll try to find a pedometer like you described. Where would I likely find one (in a store) ???

Talking Thanks for joining in

I think this is a marvelous way to increase ones fitness. Especially for busy people who dont have time to go to the gym, etc. Call it "lifestyle fitness" if you want.

Becca: you will be putting on miles if your working in a hospital, I remember those shifts!!!

cc4: You can get one in a sporting goods store or at Sears or even WalMart I bet. The first one I had I ordered on line, it was very small and perported to be the most accurate one on the market, but alas I lost it. The one I have now I got at Sears for <20 buck and it works just fine even though it's a little more obvious. What ever you get just be sure it counts steps or you will have to measure your stride and divide your total distance by that to get steps, a bit of a hassle.

Good luck all.

I would love to join! We actually have a wellness team at my work who tries to get people to participate in various healthy activities throughout the year. This is the second year we did the "10K a Day." We did it all together for the month of May.

I decided after it got over that I wanted to still keep trying, so I've been wearing my pedometer religiously every day since. I even talked to a few gals I work with and we have decided to do mini-challenges every month. What we do is we keep track of how many steps we take per day, whether or not we did any other form of exercise per day, how many glasses of water we drink, and if we ate healthy for breakfast / lunch / dinner. The other girls aren't doing low-carb, but we just keep track of our meals by what we judge as being healthy. We even decided to make it interesting by putting in a dollar a week, and whoever does the best at the end of the month gets the money. Last month there were only three of us. This month there are 5, and I know of more people that want to join next month.

I've been lurking around this site for months, and this is the first post that got me so excited I just had to reply. If you'll have me I'd love to join, and have more people to help keep me motivated. I can't wait to hear how everybody is doing!

Sorry about the long post, just got so excited, I couldn't stop typing!

Count me in!
I read this a few days ago, Jalera, but as I had only managed about 3000 steps that day, I couldn't bring myself to join.

I have some medical probs that make it a bit painful to walk, but I know I won't feel any better if I DON'T walk, and generally move more, so counting steps is ideal for me.

I am aiming for 10,000 steps daily, but will be quite content with 7000 for now.

And yesterday, I'm happy to report, I made over 7.2K steps.

Laural, mine cost about A$40, they may cost less where you are. I remember Weight Watchers sold one that I tried to use in my WW days, but it was hopelessly inaccurate.

Happy walking everyone!

Roz

Talking Thursday's steps

13.1 K - two small words "yard work"

Rosebud: Thanks for "bringing yourself to join". This challenge is for anyone and I glad you set a goal that is reasonable to you. Welcome.

Laural: Welcome

Mickey: Thanks for getting excited about this challenge, I thought it seemed like a great idea. It sounds like you have a very supportive work environment. Welcome.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyones step totals, and tips for putting in extra steps.

Great job Rosebud, how are you feeling any extra aches and pains, I sure hope not.

Personally, my butt is killing me today, not from the walking tho' for squats I was trying to do yesterday. The first time I tried squats I could hardly get up and down out of my chair at work -- this time I'd rather stand!!! LOL. Maybe I should lay off those for a while till I get fitter!

How's every one else doing?

Yesterday's steps: 11,160!
And very proud of myself, I am!

It was actually pretty easy. We have a radio station here that plays oldies on Saturday nights - mostly all those great songs from the sixties, even some from the fifties. So when we got home from the pub (went out for dinner), we bopped for ages to some wonderful old songs. Certainly a fun way to exercise.

Will have to remember to do that next Saturday night.

I hope you're able to sit down more comfortably by now, Jalera.

So, Becca, cc, Mickey and Laural, how are you guys going?

Roz

Jsut got a pedometer today. Wal-Mart didn't have any that measured steps. I went to Sports Authority this morning, but they were sold out of all but two different pedometers. One only measured miles and the other, the package had been cut open. I finally found a decent one that counts steps at Academy Sports.

I didn't get the pedometer until Noon today. I got 9,406 steps since Noon.

Default Average weekly steps for June 15-21, 2003

Friday: 10.8 K steps - walked out to pick up supper.
Saturday: dropped my pedometer on the floor at 9:30 pm and it reset itself to 0 arrrrg!!! The last time I looked at it it was nearly 9.0 K and I did 1.1 K after so I'll say: 10.0K for the day - walked out to pick up lunch, took stairs instead of elevator, parked far from the door. Tip: take off pedometer before pulling down pants to go potty!!!! LOL.

Weekly average: 10.7K

How's everyone else's doing? Do we want to keep posting daily or just our weekly average with tips??

cc: Great job first day!!

Rosebud: You had more steps in you than you thought, eh? And doesn't wearing the pedometer change your mind about what exercise is? Who would have thought that bopping (I'm assuming) with your sweetie would add up to so many steps!!!
