Default diverticulosis

I have diverticulosis which somtimes flares up into diverticulitis so I MUST get enough fiber everyday. Of course one easy way to do that is to eat a high fiber cereal and lots of fruits and veggies - in other words lots of carbs. In looking at the sample menues there is no way I can get my 30 grams of fiber a day during induction. any ideas on how to get the fiber w/o cheating?

Hi bcrandall, welcome!

Another possessor of those rotten diverticuli here.

I have found since low carbing that if I have as much as 30g fibre, I have more pain and diarrhoea than ever.

I usually get between 10 and 20, with lots of vegies and 1 tablespoon of psyllium husks (the active ingredient of metamucil ) every morning. I stay pretty much symptom free.

As for Induction, I think in your case you can use a little discretion. I worked out some time ago, that you can have a lot more than the prescribed 3 cups salad/vegies if you count all the carbs. I think Dr Atkins assumed we would be eating eggs, cheese, cream and other sources of carbs as well as the 3 cups of vegies.

If you have not already, consider joining www.fitday.com where you can work out your carbs, calories etc for the day.

All the best to you, matey.

That I spend far too much time here.
If you click on the eggcups under your name, you'll see that as you post more, your eggs will become chicken legs will become T-bones. When you reach 3000 posts, you get a lobster, then another for the next thousand until you reach 7000, then you'll get a buffalo.

Cheers,

Rosebud

Hi BCRandall,

My husband is just getting over a bout of diverticulitus which he was hospitalized for. He had been on Atkins about 4 wks. The surgeon that came to see him told him he did not believe it was Atkins that caused it, but we were not taking any fiber suppliments at the time. His recommendation was to heal and then start the plan again using the fiber suppliments everyday. He isn't there yet, but I have begun to take the suppliments. It seems to work better for me to take them at night instead of in the morning.

Anyway take care of yourself.

JoAnn
