What about carbohydrate content?

Carbohydrates (in grams) for a 3.5 fluid ounce serving of:
Red wine - 1.8
Rose wine - 1.5
White wine - 0.8

I found this information on www.fetzer.com, you may want to look up the brand of wine you are drinking and go from there.

Remember to make DRY white or red wine...

No White Zinfandel ( is that really wine, or fancy KoolAid?)
No Gewürztraminer
No Reisling (dry or off dry should be fine though)

And if you are on Induction, no wine at all (sigh!)

OK, (showing my ignorance), so what would I ask for in a restaurant then? (Can't remember the names of the dry white wines)

Ah! That helps...

Ask for:

Chardonnay
Pinot Grigio
Sauvignon Blanc
Dry Reisling

There may be a fractional difference in carbs but there are a couple of reasons why red may be better.

A british study looked at the polyphenols. These are plant pigments, which impart a ruby hue to everything from sweet ports to dry Chateauneufs. Olyphenols tend to be potent antioxidants.

Dr Eades of PP fame suggests that recent studies have shown red wine to be an effective agent for increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin.

As we are shooting for lower insulin levels Eades suggests that it not only doesn't hurt to add wine to our regimen; it actually helps.

Bottoms up

A note on Reislings, particularly of German origin:

The German word for "dry" is "trocken", but it means that the grapes had shriveled into raisins before they were crushed into wine, which raised the sugar content of the wine to huge levels!

Bottom line - avoid "trocken" Reislings.

Interesting, Gotbeer, but not neccessarily true. I lived 20 minutes from the Rhine river valley for over four years, and every glass of Trocken or Halb Trocken (also called off-dry here) Reisling was in fact, dry, like a Chardonnay. Just plain Reisling is the sweetest.

You're right - I was thinking of the trockenberenauslese - "very late-picked dry berries".

Many of these wines also list the "residual sugar" amounts on the label - that may be a better guide than the name.
