A refeed is for heavy exercisers and weight-lifters who need to periodically restore muscle glycogen (sugar) stores to maintain performance. Pro level body builders may need a major refeed once a week with a mini refeed in the middle of the week.
Basically, a refeed is a measured and controlled consumption of certain kinds of carbohydrates for a limited period of time, such as 12-36 hours. In general, pasta, breads and cereals are ok. Simple sugars (glucose) are ok. Fructose (Cokes, fruit) is right out. High-fat is also out on a refeed, as fat inhibits muscle uptake of the sugars. Hard core refeeds often involve strangely high amounts of things like gatorade and sweet tarts, but chocolate cake, for example, isn't such a good idea (too high in fat).
If you're doing lots of heavy exercise (lifting, long runs several days a week) and you start 'bonking' (unexplainable poor performance), you may benefit from a refeed.
A refeed is not a license to go hog wild on all the stuff you normally can't have on LC.
More details will be available in the Exercist/CKD forum.
Cheers,
